happy last day of disability pride month! proud of this community & remembering the great group of people before us & the grassroots advocates who worked to create the ADA ✨

#disabilitypridemonth A smiling Team USA Paralympian wearing a navy U.S. Paralympic Team quarter-zip looks off-camera while seated in front of a collage of newspaper headlines about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Handwritten white text across the image reads, “Disability Pride Month.” The newspaper clippings reference the passage and signing of the ADA, highlighting its impact on disability rights and accessibility. Interventions, and disability supports broadly, were designed for a desired behavioral outcome in mind - not the user itself. In the U.S., we have a minority-majority enrollment across schools where the prevalence of children of color receiving special education and early intervention is on the rise. However, the tools provided to families, teachers, and providers often don't account for the cultural diversity of the community.

Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Interventions (NDBIs) serve as a foundational point of innovation. Given their flexibility and success rate, it's a popular go to for children with developmental disabilities.

📝 In my recent practitioner paper, I outline steps for understanding the adaptation of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) for South Asians. My substack takes these research findings and puts them in thoughtful considerations for providers to consider. Though PECS is universal across NDBIs, it's adaptation is something that is readily being explored.

📣 Be part of the discussion, what tactics have worked for you in the past? What nifty tricks show promise that your principal or boss may not have taught you? This space is about inclusion, safety, and family.

We do not want sympathy, simply to just live as we are not dead yet.!

Living with chronic illness namely secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) we remain so grateful for many things non disabled people take for granted. Regardless of our circumstances we have learnt to remain calm and resilient. Yet when we do not look sick majority think it’s ok to be judgemental.

It’s essentially important that just because someone does not look ill, you automatically presume otherwise. You do not see the levels of anxiety, frustration, grief etc someone deals with constantly. Nor the amount of preparation or planning which is non negotiable for any task we can physically do. Remember our energy levels can and do run empty without prior warning.

You do not see the amount of time we need to ensure public bathrooms are safe to use. Mainly people leaving the floor soaking wet which can cause someone that is transferring from wheelchair to toilet a higher chance of slipping and therefore causing injury.

Around 1.3 billion people around the world live with a significant disability. Around 1 in 4 will become disabled not by choice or born with before they reach retirement age. I would personally swap my body and carry out any type of work for very little payment if I could live without MS.

However I have and no cure has been found for MS. Thankful I have an incredibly supportive group of family and friends. I am incredibly grateful for my electric wheelchair as my new legs as MS has taken away my physical mobility. For as long as I possibly can it will not leave me surrounded by 4 walls housebound.

I still enjoy life albeit at a much slower pace and travel while I still can. No one knows what the future holds and unfortunately that is a certainty we cannot control. Your health is your wealth.

#givingupisnotanoption #keepfightingandkeepsmiling

We are told when many of us are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis that we lack Vitamin D. Primary source is sunlight which gives many people such a powerful energy. This ultimately lifts your mood and guarantees a smile.

Gone are the days when I could lie on a day bed soaking up the rays feeling the warmth on my skin. Whether I read a book or listen to music I would drift away worry free the only thing on my mind was to remember to reapply sunscreen.
MS got in the way like a party popper as I could no longer physically get up from a day bed without someone helping.

Add to the mix your need to constantly use the bathroom it can cause a pain to all involved and energy I needed to use each time. Adapting I choose to sit on a chair placing my legs on another seat. Blissfully enjoying the rays however when the temperature is over 28 degrees the golden ball feels like it has dropped from the sky and my body can go into paralysis’ many of us experience the Uhthoff’s phenomenon. Therefore I cannot move my body as if it’s evaporated into the atmosphere.

I whole heartedly love being outdoors, sunshine, crystal clear turquoise waters, with a sea breeze keeping me cool. Watching waves crashing onto
the seashore. I am so grateful for my electric wheelchair as I can spin around in the sun even stop and enjoy. If temperatures are rising and I feel my body is going into shutdown mode. I escape into the shade or an air conditioned room to regulate my body temperature. I must then have a short nap no longer than 20 minutes and I am fully recharged.

Diagnosed with RRMS January 2017 which has now processed to SPMS over the past year. I continue my daily physio exercises which are non negotiable. If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.

Where there is a will you always find a way. I refuse to be left inside 4 walls and will continue chasing the sunshine. Your suntan will fade memories however will last forever.

Sometimes advocating doesn’t happen on a stage—it happens in the middle of a gym.

Today I was doing my band monster walks and noticed the looks. You know the ones. Instead of shrinking myself, I decided to have a little fun and put on a show. 😏

As someone with Cerebral Palsy, my workouts don’t always look like everyone else’s, and that’s okay. Disability isn’t something to hide.

If you needed this reminder today: You belong. Take up space. Move your body in the way that works for you. Your disability, adaptive equipment, or different way of moving doesn’t make you any less deserving of being there.

Happy Disability Pride Month. Let’s keep making spaces where everyone feels like they belong. 💚♿️

Disability Pride Month is about showing up exactly as I am: scars, strength, and every part of the journey my body has carried me through. My burns are the result of years of healing, and they deserve to be seen without apology.

A few weeks ago, someone told me to cover up my scars “to prevent scaring people.” It was said casually, but comments like that cut deep. They teach disabled people that our bodies are uncomfortable, distracting, or something to hide. And when messages like that echo through a lifetime, they can make people feel smaller, quieter, and less worthy.

Pride is choosing visibility. Pride is about turning ignorance into understanding. Pride is saying: my body is not a mistake, and it doesn’t need permission to exist.

So here’s where I stand: I’m not covering up. I’m not shrinking. I’m not dimming myself to fit someone else’s idea of acceptable. I’m choosing visibility and that’s something every disabled person deserves.

This hand, this flower, this moment - they’re all part of the same story. I’m going to bloom 🌻
