Jājpur and Devi Birajā together embody the earliest memory of Shakti worship in Utkala. The magnificence of Jājpur and Devi Birajā is extensively eulogized in both historical records and scriptural texts. According to scholars, the earliest reference to Jājpur is found in the Mahābhārata. Furthermore, its antiquity and prominence are affirmed by detailed descriptions of Birajā and Birajā Kshetra in ancient scriptures such as the Vāyu Purāna, Brahmānda Purāna, Brahma Purāna, Rudrayāmala Tantra, Brihannila Tantra, Tantra Chudāmani, Ashtapitha Māhātmya, and Chaitanya Charitāmrita.

From a historical perspective, Jajpur, regarded as the cornerstone of Odisha's history, has remained inseparably intertwined with Devi Birajā and the traditions of Tantra and Shakti worship for over two millennia. Though Jājpur, once adorned with all emblems of extraordinary prosperity and grandeur during the reign of Bhauma and Keshari dynasties, lost much of its splendor while enduring the fierce onslaught of invasions, its culture, traditions, and archaeological heritage continue to evoke the golden pages of its past even today.

Jājpur, the very nucleus of Utkaliya Shakti worship, remains even today replete with Maa Birajā, the Sapta Mātrikas, and innumerable shrines of Shiva and Shakti.

Therefore, the celebration of Durgotsava in Utkala can't be conceived without jājpur

Heartiest greetings to all on the auspicious occasion of the Shāradiya Shodasha Divasiya Durgotsava.
