Still Carving

For most of my career I thought the way to get better was to keep adding.

I figured the accumulation of more information would lead to increased knowledge … and me being a better coach.

I read as much as I could. I applied it as often as I could. And it led to some semblance of success.

It worked

… until it didn’t.

By 2008 I knew a lot about a lot of things, but I was burnt out. In fact I was going to transition out of coaching entirely after the 2010 Olympic Games [that’s another story for another day].

It took me a long time to figure out that real understanding comes from what we learn to take away.

“We add to know, and we subtract to understand.”

But subtraction is hard. Much harder than adding. What you know becomes part of who you are, so letting go of a method or a belief can feel like letting go of a piece of yourself. And in a complex system you don’t know whether you’ve cut the right thing until well after you’ve cut it.

So I try to take things away a little at a time, safely. Dave Snowden calls these safe-to-fail experiments. You try something small, you watch what happens, you keep what works and drop what doesn’t, and then you go again.

I’ve been coaching for over forty years, and I’m still doing it. Still adding and subtracting at the same time, and the balance keeps shifting.

… still carving.

About a year and half ago I sat in @coach_brettb backyard. He described his vision to me of what this building would look like, what it would have and who would fill it. It felt like a very Walt Disney moment if you are familiar with that story. Picturing a physical place with amazing people before it existed. This weekend I walked back into the same backyard to this physical building with incredible people that flew from all over North America to be there.

I wish I had a picture of every speaker to pay homage to their preparation, message and insight. There was something from every one of you that I get to take back to Canada. So thank you.

@julietstarrett - business and life with your spouse, credit loud and credit it often
@missymmcbeth - Sanity tactics, there is a cost to authenticity
@physio_elis @rehab_code - purpose after a career pinnacle, true closure is something you may never get
@jenwiderstrom - go through your origin story, your valleys build toward your mountain.
@askjeevers - no such thing as thinking the “right” way, think like you.
@thereadystate - stop driving with your check engine light on
@jasonleydon - audit what you are tied to that could disappear the fastest
@coach_brettb @aocoaching - a brand is just who you really are.
@mountaineeringa - you can’t always count on me because I can’t always be available
@fingermash - we add to know, we subtract to understand

This wasn’t about how to be a better coach, employee or business owner. It was about what to do when life happens through people’s stories of their success, failures and everything in between. It wasn’t just about the great speakers, but also the people there listening, the conversations on breaks, over meals, in the hot tub and basking in the Phoenix sun 🥵

What a memorable and great weekend!

A quick reflection on the first Non-Superficial BS Conference, held at my buddy @coach_brettb’s new compound just north of Phoenix.

First, it meant a lot to be invited to the very first one, the grand opening of the compound. Thanks to Brett for the invite, and to everyone who took time to come to spend a couple of days with us.

The highlight for me was the time with the other speakers. @thereadystate and @julietstarrett are two of the best people on the planet, and any chance I get to hang out with them is special. I hadn’t met @jenwiderstrom or @missymmcbeth before. It was a real treat, and I hope it’s the first of many interactions with both of them.

Brett had told me about his buddy @jasonleydon and that I’d really like him and he was right. His presentation was inspiring and told with real vulnerability. I appreciated that, and it was great to meet him.

Brett wanted something different for this one. The audience wasn’t only health, performance and fitness people, and he asked the speakers to skip the polished advice and talk about how real people deal with real hardship: change, doubt, setbacks, starting over. So I told my story from 1995 to now, through a running narrative and a handful of heuristics I’ve used to make sense of the complexity of this industry, our business and our lives.

Big thanks to the @aocoaching facilitators, to everyone who took time out of their busy lives to come, and to fellow presenter and good buddy @askjeevers for sharing six 45-minute drives between downtown Scottsdale and Anthem over the course of 3 days. And also for being the 3rd funniest presenter after Missy and Juliet.

Brett gave us some constraints. I had to work in this guy. I have seen maybe 15 minutes of Game of Thrones in my life. But I went all-in on Tyrion. No half measure …

I started my story in the middle — meeting Dan Pfaff in 1995, and how this meeting set the course for the rest of my career.

In 2008, I was burnt out. And honestly was ready to step away from coaching. Obviously I didn’t, but I was very close

After a series of financial setbacks, in 2018 we had to redefine what ALTIS is. From a T&F company that did some education to an education compa

Flying back home today after helping to run and speak at the @aocoaching NoBS conference, and what a conference it was.

There is simply no other conference like this out there, PERIOD.

The speaker panel was loaded with professionals who have and currently move the world in their own way. Every presenter gave a talk they never had before and it got as real as it could about life and business.

For me, it was an amazing experience to be on the panel with @jenwiderstrom @missymmcbeth @fingermash @askjeevers @coach_brettb @thereadystate @julietstarrett @mountaineeringa @physio_elis.

This was a packed house, with so many attendees from all different walks and backgrounds that the environment was filled with curiosity, insight, and value.

Next year is already locked and loaded!
