Upstairs at The RuMa, a Singapore-born Korean steakhouse has made itself at home for four months. 🔥

In conversation, @chef_louishan traces @guum.sg back to his family’s cookouts in Korea. He talks about the ssam that gets a whole table involved, rethinking a menu for Kuala Lumpur while staying true to the flavours behind it, the days and months of work diners never see, and what he keeps learning from the @atas.kl team.

And if the response is positive, who knows: more GU:UM in KL 👀 For now, GU:UM at ATAS runs through 30 November.

🇲🇾 Located within the one Michelin-keyed RuMa Hotel & Residences @therumahotel , ATAS @atas.kl is an elevated Malaysian comfort food concept, courtesy of Chef Suhalmi Tasir.

We came for its lunch menu that began with the Cucur Udang being a deep-fried tiger prawn fritter in a light, golden crunch; contrasting the Pegaga Salad in another tiger prawn dish with zingy and appetizing calamansi dressing. Mains followed such as the Ikan Assam Pedas in a tender Barramundi fish tail, supported by a bright, punchy tamarind broth. Meanwhile, we truly adored the Lamb Shank Kuzi, in a slow-braised Australian lamb shank with meats that slid off effortlessly, matched by both sweet and savoury notes.

Set with open kitchen views, ATAS is an elevated experience of time-honoured classics matched with global, premium ingredients; all matched by a scrumptious breakfast buffet experience, the charming all-day diner is an inviting destination for locals and travellers, from early in the morning and well into the night.

GU:UM, the refined Korean steakhouse from @chef_louishan’s NAE:UM Group, has taken over @atas.kl for a residency bringing real Korean fire-grill sensibility to the city, pork-free without asking you to notice. 🥩🔥

Start with the yukhwae jeon, Korean beef tartare over a crisp potato pancake. Uncle Lulu’s fried rice is served with stone pot heat, grilled squid and kimchi doing the heavy lifting. An impressive Surf & Turf Platter of premium beef, lamb chops, tiger prawns, grouper, all built for the ssam ritual, wrapped in leafy greens and perilla leaves with the condiments that make it work. Finish with hotteok, its burnt honey ice cream melting into caramelised nuts and dried fruit.

@guum.sg’s residency at @therumahotel runs through 30 November, reservations are highly encouraged.

Discover a more intimate side of Kuala Lumpur at The RuMa Hotel and Residences, a One MICHELIN Key hotel nestled in the heart of the city’s Golden Triangle, just moments from KLCC and the Petronas Twin Towers. Our stay in the Deluxe Suite offered a beautifully considered sense of space, with a separate bedroom and living area, floor-to-ceiling views of the city skyline, and a tranquil atmosphere that made the heart of KL feel surprisingly serene.

Designed around the idea of home, The RuMa blends contemporary sophistication with a thoughtful expression of Malaysian heritage. From its warm timber, rich textures and locally inspired details to its signature afternoon tea, leisurely poolside dining, and the ever-elegant ATAS, there is a sense of understated refinement throughout the stay. ATAS is also currently presenting a limited-time collaboration with Guem, bringing another layer of culinary creativity to the experience.

For travellers looking to experience Kuala Lumpur from a more refined perspective, The RuMa offers an elegant urban retreat where thoughtful hospitality, local character and the energy of the city come together effortlessly. 🥂🇲🇾 @therumahotel @upcycle_comms

🇲🇾 The RuMa Hotel and Residences , Kuala Lumpur (One Michelin Key 🗝️) @therumahotel is a five-star urban sanctuary in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, where heritage influences meet contemporary elegance.

The name RuMa means “home” in Malaysia, and the feeling is much the same warm, intimate, and effortlessly refined.

For this return, I stayed in the Deluxe Suite: spacious and beautifully layered with rattan, timber, and copper accents. The bathtub by the window, with the KL skyline as its backdrop.

Breakfast with many options, you can choose Malaysian or Western. We also had lunch at ATAS @atas.kl - it was a journey through Malaysian flavours. We tried Cucur Udang, Pegaga Salad, Terung Balado, Ikan Assam Pedas, Lamb Shank Kuzi, and Nangka Crème Brûlée.

Both the pool and gym are located on Level 6. The pool, overlooking the city, makes for a cool spot to unwind, while the gym is a great place to stay active during your stay.

I really enjoyed my stay here. Highly recommend The RuMa Hotel and Residences for your next stay in Kuala Lumpur.

The RuMa Hotel and Residences takes its name from rumah, the Malay word for home, and its address on Jalan Kia Peng puts KLCC within a short walk of the lobby. Designed by MQ Studio with handcrafted pieces from Bernard Chandran and Joe Chia, the interiors draw on the city’s tin mining past, from the woven bronze screens at the entrance to the bronze fountain caged in terracotta just inside.

Rattan furnishings, lantern shaped lampshades and screen doors carry those Malaysian references into all 253 rooms and suites, and the 60 square metre Deluxe Suite frames the Petronas Twin Towers from its windows, with a deep oval tub, a separate rain shower and a minibar that costs nothing to raid.

ATAS, reached by a double spiral staircase to the mezzanine above the lobby, is where Executive Chef Suhalmi Tasir cooks his way through the peninsula’s home kitchens. Cucur udang of tiger prawn arrive crisp alongside a chilli plum sauce, while pegaga (Malaysian pennywort) is tossed with spicy dried shrimp, grilled tiger prawn and a sharp calamansi dressing. Terung balado sets stir fried eggplant under house made sambal merah, crispy shallots and scallions, and the ikan assam pedas, a barramundi tail in tamarind broth scented with ginger flower and kesum, is the dish to order. Lamb shank kuzi comes braised with five spice, cashews and black raisins, and the nangka crème brûlée closes with honeyed jackfruit beneath a crackling sugar crust.

SEVEN, the lobby bar, handles cocktails and lighter plates, though the sixth floor is where afternoons tend to vanish, with a 25 metre infinity pool cantilevered over the skyline, the SANTAI pool bar alongside and the UR Spa, complete with its own barbershop, a few steps away.

A Michelin Key now recognises what the hotel has built over nearly eight years, a stay in which Malaysian craft and cooking form the substance rather than the decoration. Best for travellers who want the Golden Triangle on their doorstep and a dinner downstairs worth staying in for.
