For 25 years, the TextielLab has been a place where artists, designers and other creatives work alongside technical experts to explore what textiles can be and do. The symposium brought that spirit of collaboration into the conversation — connecting past developments with current practices and looking ahead to the ideas, technologies and collaborations that may shape the future of textiles.⁠
⁠
From keynote talks and critical conversations to hands-on break-out sessions, the day showed that innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. It grows through exchange: by sharing knowledge, questioning assumptions and bringing different perspectives together.⁠

Bookyard, Gouda Oost

The modern library serves multiple roles, one of which is as a social gathering space. OMA's library designs have increasingly embraced the concept of the library as a living room, a notion rooted in the Très Grande Bibliothèque. As the project described, "It suggests that, liberated from its former obligations, architecture’s last function will be the creation of the symbolic spaces that accommodate the persistent desire for collectivity."

In designing the Gouda Library - Bookyard, we followed this idea by maximizing spaces for community engagement, multifunctionality and adaptability. Our research, which included local residents and middle school students - often difficult to attract to libraries - informed the design. An existing mosque building is encapsulated and integrated into the floorplan. The result is an interior square with an adaptable skin, open to the environment and accessible to all, meeting a wide range of needs.

What happens when the future of woven metal is still being shaped? At Threads of Innovation: Then. Now. Next, this break-out session offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the TextielLab’s ongoing R&D project exploring the possibilities of woven metal.⁠

Join Chris Kabel @chris_kabel, Florian Idenburg @florianidenburg (@solidobjectives), Akane Moriyama @studioakanemoriyama, Tomas Dirrix @ateliertomasdirrix and Team Thursday @teamthursday for an inside look at a research process that is still unfolding. Through presentations, material samples and open conversation, the session explores ongoing experiments, unexpected discoveries and setbacks—and how innovation emerges through curiosity, collaboration and trial and error.⁠

Participants will get a first look at ideas and developments that are still in progress, while exploring how pushing the boundaries of materials can open up new possibilities for architecture, design and textile innovation. Following the discussion, participants are invited to visit the weaving machine and Sample Studio, where the research is currently taking place.⁠

Since our move to @de.oudkerk in spring we’ve been adjusting it to a place suitable for making and organising all kind of things. Slowly getting there now ☺️

The Oud Kerk is built in 1929 by modernist pioneer J.J.P. Oud. The white church once anchored a bold social housing experiment, designed as the church of the Kiefhoek, a place for (apostolian) gathering, reflection, and choir practice in Rotterdam South. We are currently transforming it into a collective artists space together with:

Dit jaar hebben we Transit gelanceerd: het meerjarige architectuurprogramma van @hetnoordbrabantsmuseum in samenwerking met @unfair_amsterdam, @ateliertomasdirrix en @somehowcreativeservices. We hebben zes ontwerpen geselecteerd vanuit de open call. Nu is het jouw beurt. Bekijk de plannen voor een tijdelijk bouwwerk in de binnentuin en een attractie voor kinderen in de patiotuin. Last month, the first dance performance took place in the church: ‘Ayatori’ by @charlottepuco, together with dancers @hinako_con and @annakha.f.

Charlotte encouraged the dancers to unravel their own poetic play and instinctive dance. A thread was their tool to connect the audience and architecture.

Plein - De ontmoetingsplek in Fenix

Dit is de plek waar wij hebben gebouwd aan een flexibel interieur met, onder andere, een kiosk, 15 tafels en 20m wandbanken.

Duurzaamheid staat bij de FENIX hoog in het vaandel. Het materiaal waarmee we voornamelijk hebben gewerkt is CLT, Cross Laminated Timber, wat je veel ziet in de innovatieve houtbouw. Het bestaat uit meerdere lagen massief hout dat kruislinks op elkaar is verlijmd. Bij uitstek een materiaal wat krachtig is voor een constructie, zoals deze, met een fijne houtlook en nog belangrijker, het voldoet aan de duurzaamheidseisen van de opdrachtgever. In dit project is gekozen voor een vuren- en essenhout variant. Naast dat het buitengewoon mooi is, is essenhout hard en daarom geschikt voor delen die veel worden belast zoals de zitvlakken en (tafel)bladen. Het geheel is met olie afgewerkt waardoor de tekening van het hout meer in het oog springt.

Plein - De ontmoetingsplek in Fenix

Dit is de plek waar wij hebben gebouwd aan een flexibel interieur met, onder andere, vier verrijdbare tribunes.

De wens van de opdrachtgever was om de tribunes, zo’n 1000 kg per stuk, verrijdbaar te maken. Met een uitsparing aan de onderzijden van de poten kunnen we de tribune optillen. Met heavy weight hydraulische krikken tillen we de tribunes op en schuiven er stevige hondjes onder. En voilà, de tribunes zijn verplaatsbaar.

Samen met @unfair_amsterdam, @ateliertomasdirrix en @somehowcreativeservices zoeken we jonge architecten (max. 10 jaar afgestudeerd) die een ruimtelijke ingreep willen doen in het museum.
