I write about characters who are biracial because that is my lived experience. There are so many beautiful things about it, but feels of lack in myself as well.
For a long time, I wasn’t sure where I fit in my Filipino culture. I couldn’t speak the language, and that made me feel inauthentic as a Filipina. Language isn’t my strength, but words are which is ironic.
I never felt more Filipino than when I started writing from our folklore. It was incredible how SEEN I felt when I learned that the Manananggal would tear herself in two. Wasn’t that me, trying to be two separate parts instead of one whole?
Those differences will always exist, but I live in this body and how they come together is so unique part of the Filipino American experience. #FAHMBookstaTour #filtheshelves @atemarcelareads__ @filipinaauthorsbookclub

Love doesn’t come in one shape. Neither do we.

I came to @filbookfestival because of THE SHAPE OF LOVE. I wanted to share a story about families staying close across an ocean with the people I wrote it for. The weekend was amazing!!! But what stayed with me most were the people.

I met scientists, artists who love sports, artists who teach, artists who find their muse in nature (@devheyrana - missed taking a pic with you!). Writers with WWII connections. Tech minds. Academics. Folks born in the Philippines and folks raised among many cultures.

No one was just one thing. Each person was a whole constellation. The stars are the parts of who we are.

That’s intersectionality: this year’s theme for Filipino American History Month: we are never only one thing, and our stories are richer for it.

I stood in that sky all weekend, and I’m still dazzled. If you’re reading this, know that you have a constellation, too. I hope you let it shine. ✨

Check out @allthatiamchildrensbook and @authorrobinalvarez on this #FAHMBookstaTour tour too!

Hi Besties!

I know it's been a minute so here's my proof of life!

If you're new here or if you've stuck around, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here, and letting me yap about Books, Bangtan, all the things going on in my life. This is my safe space, and it can be yours too🫶

I honestly don't know how I got through this past month without crying. Thankfully, I have an amazing support system and my favorite go to places to get through my hectic schedule.

I promise, I've been reading here and there. I've been enjoying Threshing Day, reading and listening to the GA audiobook has let me escape to one of my favorite fantasy worlds- Basgiath🖤 every chapter has me missing my favorite characters.

I've also picked up more books by Filipino Authors🇵🇭
I'll share more of that soon!

& don't get me started on this song- it lives rent free, 24/7 in my head, on repeat every day. 😌

Here are some of mine🥰

I recently went karaoke with my besties and we had an amazing girls night! And yes, we sang BTS songs obviously! 💜💜💜

Thank you @gallerybooks and @scoutpressbooks for the lovely book mail! 🫶

October marks Filipino American History Month 🇵🇭 and I am delighted to be part of the #FAHMBookstaTour 📚! It’s an amazing collective of Filipinx writers/creatives making sure that our stories get told.

Welcome to my space and make yourself at home 💐😄 I’m working on a memoir and this is the first time sharing actual pages from my manuscript. I’m expecting to finish writing by the end of the year. Here’s to hoping 🤞🏽🙏🏽

Also, make sure you check out my co-poster, writer and poet @imandq to see what he’s got in store for you on his leg of the tour 🚂💨

for the #FAHMBookstaTour, i wanted to take you to a place that’s special to me. MY HOMETOWN! i was in high school when i learned the story of The Delano Manongs, at a time when i struggled with my own identity as a Filipino and an American. their story became a beacon of light & inspiration for those who never quite fit and had to pave a way for them to belong. i hope it can inspire some of you to realize the power of your presence and your voice, especially at a time when politics have created a divide in our society. find your community and build camaraderie amongst other communities, the way the Manongs & Manangs did, & make noise when you see injustices! i encourage you all to learn their stories and remember them.

Fun Fact: October 25th is also recognized as Larry Itliong Day, as it is his birthday. (in 3 days!) how do you intend on celebrating an important figure in Fil-Am history?

➡️ also, head over to @cdrachels page for their stop on the tour!

A few 📸s from @filbookfestival! I was too busy chatting books, probably laughing, and tapping my credit card on all those bookseller payment terminals to pay more attention to social mediaing, so thanks to those shared and tagged me in on some of these great moments ❤️. A thoughtful panel with some amazing writers of mg and ya books, then reading just-under-6 minutes about a 1980s kid ghost complaining about his ET poster taken down, and connecting with folks I’ve only ever “met” online: this was my third #filbookfest and I couldn’t have had a better time.

Thank you to the organizing team for all the hard work in making this such a welcoming, well-filling experience for creatives and readers alike

I lost my Tagalog.

I immigrated to the USA when I was 5, took ESL and repeated kindergarten. Tagalog was my first language, but I don’t recall speaking it. I do remember everyone at home speaking to me only in English, probably to help me assimilate. I created Tagalog, Maglakbay for Filipino Americans reaching back to their language roots, and for anyone who wants to learn Tagalog.

1,000 curated words, each with a pronunciation, a short phrase and a sentence that takes you traveling in the Philippines. Every English translation is hidden in the puzzle too, bridging the two languages. And margins to write and draw in.

What’s a Tagalog word you still remember from childhood?

Happy #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth!!

I’m posting today for the 2nd Annual #FAHMBookstaTour 💛 Don’t forget to visit my tour partner @trishupauthorstar‘s page as well!! 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘍𝘈𝘏𝘔 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴. 𝘚𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵!

THANK YOU TO @atemarcelareads__ @filipinaauthorsbookclub for hosting this and bringing all of us together to support our culture, history, and each other.

We celebrate FAHM to honor the history, accomplishments and legacy of Filipinos in the US.

My papa moved to Hawai‘i from the PI to work on the sugarcane plantation on the island of Kaua‘i and worked his whole life to provide for his family. Rarely speaking English and surrounding himself with the other plantation workers on the island, he always had everything he needed. I’m forever indebted to him and my grandma.

I’m also honestly so thankful for this tour because I’ve learned so much and will continue to do so. 30 years old, raised with my Filipino side, and how did I not have the knowledge of the first Filipinos arriving at Morro Bay? Or the negative and dehumanizing depictions of Filipinos in American political comics? I have such a privilege to be born in an area and time where I don’t face the issues our Manongs and Manangs had to and I’ll never take that for granted. I can’t stress how important this tour is and how proud it makes me to see the vital roles and contributions Filipinos have made in America.
