Congratulations, Anthonette. Praying for a fruitful, goldly, fun, complete marriage.

Igbo Traditional Marriage is much more than a wedding day. It is a process that brings together families, communities and generations of tradition.

The journey begins with Iju Ese, which means "to enquire." During this stage, both families learn about each other, discussing family history, values, reputation and background. It is considered one of the most important foundations of an Igbo marriage.

The second stage is Iku Aka, the formal introduction. This is where the groom's family officially visits the bride's family to declare their intentions. If accepted, the bride's family provides a list of requirements for the next stage.

The third stage is Ugwo Isi, often known as the bride price ceremony. The groom's family fulfils the traditional obligations requested by the bride's family, demonstrating commitment and respect.

Finally comes Igba Nkwu, the grand traditional wedding celebration. This includes the famous palm wine ceremony, where the bride searches for her groom among the guests before presenting him with the drink. Once completed, the union receives the blessing of both families.

These customs continue to thrive across Nigeria and throughout the global Igbo diaspora. Whether celebrated in London, Lagos, Houston or Toronto, the traditions remain remarkably consistent.

The process highlights values that many families still treasure today: respect, family involvement, accountability, commitment and community support.

For many couples, understanding these traditions helps them appreciate the deeper meaning behind one of Africa's most celebrated wedding cultures.
