Villette follows Lucy Snowe, who moves to Belgium to become a teacher. Lucy had nobody and the move to Belgium is basically her last resort. Villette is heavily based on the authors own life as she was a teacher in Brussels. Lucy is a very quiet and more of an observant main character than she is a participant in the events of her own life. That’s not to say she will not always stand up for herself. I found Lucy to be a very smart and headstrong character, she will take a lot but any slight about her personality she will not accept. Being a teacher in Villette where the main language is french which Lucy doesn’t speak gives us a lot of french dialogue that neither we or the character understands, that’s what makes this book not a 5 star for me. Besides the writing requiring a lot of focus and attention, the french dialogue that sometime goes on for several pages truly lost me as a reader. And yes sure one could use google translate, but that takes away from the reading experience I think. And sure as Lucy learns french the french dialogue becomes less and less and more translated. What I really loved in this book, is Lucy kindness but also steadfastness! She will help her friends while still being very real, her clocking Ginerva everytime was amazing!
Through the whole book I was sat guessing who would eventually win Lucy’s heart, because let’s be honest if Greta Gerwig thought me anything it’s that the main character cannot end up unmarried.

My absolute favorite thing is how Lucy is several times seen arguing and battling with feelings. She will have several dialogues with Faith, Hope and Truth, she adressed them as mistresses and talks with them. Lucy also encounters a ghost, which she somehow keeps to herselt?
The book also has one of the best representations of mental health that l’ve read in a classic. There is one chapter in particular that is so raw and real.
I’m sure upon a reread this book will be a 5 star, and I absolutely recommend it! A beautiful story about a girl making her way in a very unforgiving world!

📖 5 books in 5 weeks (ish) 📖

These are my 5 hopefuls to finish this half of 2025. Thanks for the tag @tbrchronicles... I don't know if I can do it.

Because Wind and Truth is one of my 5, I went ahead and chose 2 shorter books (by Becky Chambers). I also chose Furysong so I can finish off the Aurelian Cycle (which has just gotten a new cover release - can't wait for them to be available in 🇦🇺). And The Baby Dragon Cafe for something a bit cuter and a bit more fun 💜

I've tagged a few accounts, but would live to see if anyone else wants to take up the challenge 👀😬 more like 4 weeks really....

What books are you hoping to finish off before we enter the second half of the year?

my first, fave & future reads (favourite authors edition)

First, I love Karin Slaughter🫶 . I'm trying to complete her Grant County series but unfortunately I have only read the first book in that series.
Emily Henry: how much do I love reading her books? As much as I love reading Karin's books.. She was one of the first romance authors whose book I read when I was new to the romance genre. No regrets so far.
Me stumbling upon Catharina Maura's books was nothing but a coincidence. One reel was all it took for me to go read the first book in The Windsors series & well, the rest is history.
I still remember opening my Amazon package of The Folk of the Air trilogy - never knew I was entering into a world that will never disappoint me.
ACOTAR... I don't care what others say. I will always love the series. I think I have to make a separate post for that because I have a lot to say. Excited to delve into Throne of Glass series.

Tagging some of you but if you see this post then do share your version!

#qotd : Have you read from any of these authors? Also, what are you currently reading?

PS: Today is my last (chemistry practical) exam. After this I'm done with 4th semester of my college!
