“The artists of New Orleans are one of our city’s greatest treasures,” said Walt Leger III, president and CEO of New Orleans & Company.

“Their work reflects who we are, where we’ve been and where we’re going. Every painting, sculpture, mural and performance adds another layer to the story of New Orleans. We’re proud to launch Living Artists Festival Month because we believe these artists deserve to be seen, supported and celebrated. By making it easier for people to discover their work, we’re helping ensure that the creativity that defines New Orleans continues to thrive for generations to come.”

What’s your Jam?
Artist: Joel Scilley

What’s Your Jam is a celebration of the live music venues of New Orleans. This space will be an audio/ visual representation of a musical trip across town, highlighting the music via the spaces that have provided the roots of Jazz, Bounce, Hip Hop, Blues, Zydeco, Funk, Brass Bands, and Rock history in New Orleans.

It includes 4 smaller sound booths - each of which focuses on an individual venue Preservation Hall, The Dew Drop, The Candlelight Lounge and Tipitina’s.

Turn the radio dial and listen to the music that would’ve been played in that venue, over the decades. You can also download and airdrop playlists from our music curator, Melissa
A. Weber directly to your phone.

The central space highlights historic music venues from Uptown to Downtown – Sportsman’s Lounge, Sandpiper, Maple Leaf, Original Night Cap (Louisiana Ave), Astoria, Dorothy’s Medallion, Economy Hall, Donna’s Caldonia, and Mother-in-Law.

Joel Scilley
What’s Your JAM?
Joel Scilley was born and raised in Florida and studied art, architecture, and design in New York and Europe before earning a PhD in Media and Cultural Studies. After leaving academia in 1997, Joel returned to designing and making things as a renovation carpenter in the California Bay Area. His carpentry evolved into fine woodworking, leading to the creation of his first turntable and the founding of Audiowood in 2008. Joel’s designs have been featured in exhibitions across the US, and he has been recognized as a “Person to Watch” and a “Tech Designer to Watch.” He holds a patent for an innovative modular housing design and is currently working on a series of organic, kinetic sculptures called “Hybrid Relics.” Joel has lived in New Orleans since 2013.

It’s been like a big family reunion at Jam Nola for the ribbon cutting ceremony, where we ran into our longtime friends Donna Poniatowski Sims, who operated the iconic Donna’s for decades, and who wrote an AMAZING book about that experience, and signed my copy as the “coolest lawyer in New Orleans,” along with Big Chiefs Bo Dollis, Jr. @bo.dollisjr and Dow Edwards @bigchiefdow, with our baby doll friend and board member Anita Oubre @chiquitachinola and our friend Joel Scilley @audiowood , who is a featured artist at Jam Nola. Also, we love the special exhibit dedicated to our late friend and client Royce Osborne, who filmed “All on a Mardi Gras Day.” Y’all come check it out! @jam.nola

Jazz Fest brings musical legends to the stage, but also to the track and surrounding grounds. Pat Jolly @patjolly111 is a pioneer of recording music journalism/advocacy, and she is a living legend in her own right. It’s always good catching up with folks who inspire us during this special time of year!
