ISTANBUL | looking a little windswept I finally made it see ‘Folia’ in #Istanbul which features Shinichi Sawada alongside many other contemporary artists from around the world. What an honour for his work to feature and what a building to feature in!!! This mansion is insane, and it was so busy even though it’s been open for months. It was lovely to walk around and spot work by other artists I like including Holly Stevenson, Zoe Williams and Lindsey Mendick. The accompanying book is also beautifully designed. Thank you to the curators for including Sawada’s work!

“The exhibition ‘Folia’ brings together works lent by institutions, artists and collectors from Turkey and abroad. Drawing from the idea of the idea of the “enchanted garden” envisioned by Ömer Koç, the exhibition is co-curated by Selen Ansen, and Eda Berkmen. The exhibition ‘Folia’ takes its cue from the dual meaning of the Latin word folia which refers to tree leaves and by extension to botany/nature on the one hand and to folly and excess on the other.
Exhibition closes 1 March at the Abdulmecid Efendi Mansion.”

TO INSPIRE | I mean, really!!! This small paper car was made by Shinichi Sawada, yes you read correctly! At home from around 2014-2016 he made a series of these paper cars, created from tiny ripped bits of coloured paper. They have wheels that turn, wing mirrors on bits of wire that move, seats and steering wheels, opening doors, engines in the front and other things in the back … they are pure genius. For the first time I have just eight pieces available, as he only made these for a short time.

I’ll be sharing more over time, including a bus! Do reach out should they be of interest. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!
