If you could travel anywhere in the world for the sole purpose of writing a book inspired by that place, where would you go? 📚🗺️🖊️

I asked a few writing friends and these were their responses! I would travel to Scotland (and @frogwood_studio said she’d join me) and dream up a folklore fantasy full of faeries and creatures of old.

Influenced by the stories of Greek mythology, Cynical Beast transports the reader to a different time and place. Despite being a tale all its own, you can definitely feel the classical influence - from the terminology and Greek words and phrase to the references to lesser known, but equally important, gods. I was really impressed by the amount of research that must have gone into the book. You can tell that the author has a love of both the time period and the lore.

The writing itself is lovely and descriptive. It’s easy to visualize exactly what the characters are seeing and going through. What they were thinking, feeling. I wasn’t being told a story, I was being shown. As a reader, I felt like I was transported to Thalyssia. It is an experience I will not soon forget.

The story is much darker than I anticipated. There are secrets around every corner and cruel truths revealed. The trials are dangerous, but that is far from being the most deadly thing that our MC must face while on this path of hers. The cliffhanger is absolutely diabolical and I eagerly look forward to seeing what comes next!

Starting a little #MuseumMonday 🏺series for inspiration and the first one is this Minoan Kamares Ware krater, because for me it’s one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen.

And because, as @audreyoneira pointed out, we all have drunks in our stories. (@isak_writes , looking at you, too). 👀)

Nearly 4,000 years ago, someone decorated this krater with raised flowers, swirling patterns, geometric designs and all the wonderfully elaborate details characteristic of Kamares Ware.

It is now considered part of the so-called Royal Dinner Service of Phaistos a group of spectacular vessels associated with elite/ceremonial feasting.

So imagine this thing in use, rather than sitting behind glass. Imagine it on a Minoan banquet table. Wine being poured into it. People talking, eating, arguing, flirting, getting progressively less dignified…

And maybe, hopefully, the inspiration comes to you.

(Accepting recipes for ancient wine mixtures, but please go easy on the goat cheese. 😅)

Meet Chiyo

He loves teasing the people he cares about, pretending he doesn’t worry when he absolutely does, and secretly leaving little gifts for his friends. Beneath all that confidence is a deeply loving and protective heart, but once Chiyo decides you’re his person, he’ll look after you with all his might.

The Lost Myths of Thalyssia by @audreyoneira
Review 💛 out now!

I’ve had this book on my shelf way longer than I should have!

Aerolia, turning 17 has to visit the oracle who will decide if she gets to stay on the idyllic island she knows as home or become one of the Elysian warriors chosen as sacred protectors. When chosen she has to leave her home behind and go on a journey that tests her courage, loyalty and spirit.

There is something so peaceful about how Audrey has written this story, it just sits in your bones x
I haven’t read much in Greek mythology before but this is a great take on it.

Every scene the story just unfolds so serenely that even when there is betrayal, grief and trauma, the emotion just creeps up on you.

There’s found family, slow burn romance (that sits in the background), bloodshed and brutality but everything fits together so perfectly.

There’s a twist I did not expect and an ending that left me needing to know, how and why?? So now I’ll chew my nails waiting for book 2 😭.

This was such a good read to break up all the fast paced traumatic books I’ve been reading, the kind where you want to sit with a candle on, a cosy blanket with the rain in the background.
