🍄The Tiny Magic Bookshop by August Bloom🍄

When I picked up this book, I was looking for something cozy and romantic to read. But I was wrong, although it was exactly what I needed.

First of all this book is not a romance story. It is cozy fantasy. But is also about grief, and how to come to terms with losing a loved one. When you lose someone you love so dearly, you have to figure out who you are after they die. That is what this book is about.

Max lost her mother and inherited her mothers bookshop. Her magical bookshop. The only thing is Max build a life for herself in London, where she feels she fits in more than with all of the magical creatures in Lampton.

She has to figure out what she wants to do with her life alongside grieving her mum. The book deals with all of the stages of grief and it helped me immensely feeling not alone is this process.

“Her mum, the person Max loved most in the world and she now knew was proud of her in every way, was gone. Forever. Max curled into a ball on the sofa and soaked a cushion with her tears.”

It had also lovely elements for fall, great creatures and a grumpy little owl who made her life less lonely but also a bit more difficult.

This was my work #bookclub pick this month and I just got it finished (only a day and a half late!) We were looking for a #cosyread in order of it being #spookyseason and this was the choice. Not everyone had managed to read it but those who did were in agreement about most of the points I raise in my review below.

Blurb
There’s magic in a book …
Max always felt too ordinary for the magical village of Lampton. No place more so than her mum’s bookshop, where the recommendations are more than just a matter of taste – they’re magic.
When Max’s mum dies suddenly, she leaves her daughter Lamplight Books and makes one last wish: that Max would spend a year working in the bookshop before she sells it.
Max has no desire to uproot her busy life in the city to return to a place that always made her feel inadequate, but she can’t ignore her mum’s last request. So she decides on a trial run of two weeks – if she can’t even last that long, then a year would be impossible…

My thoughts
I was immediately attracted to this book by the cover, its so eye-catching and I do love a book set in a bookshop.
I was really intrigued by the village of Lampton and enjoyed learning about some of the creatures that reside there.
Max, the main character, was probably the thing I liked least about the book. She was rather whiny and incredibly repetitive - I get it, you feel like you dont belong and wish you had a small touch of magic, but you dont! I did have a couple of teary moments though as she was having her flashes of redemption throughout.
I was expecting a couple of things to happen, and they didnt, but I can see that Cam is getting a story next and I wonder if we will see some more bits I was thinking in that.
I would like to revisit Lampton and so would read the next in the series.
A cosy, seasonal read!

Wednesday was wonderful. I chatted to @augustbloomauthor about her marvellous cosy fantasy book #TheTinyMagicBookshop as part of @erwordfest @eastridinglibraries. It was a joy to talk about books and libraries and bookshops with such a responsive audience. Also great to see @kakenzie101 there. Thank you for your kind words about my memoir. Always a pleasure to see so many of my books in the library too!
