Walking the corridors of Zaventem Ateliers means constantly catching glimpses of what is being made behind the doors.

In front of Aurélien Veyrat’s atelier, these two new Fragments columns give a pretty good sense of his practice.

Aurélien works with discarded bricks collected from completed building sites, old stock and materials that would otherwise be left behind. He cleans them, studies them, cuts them open and recomposes them according to colour, texture and internal structure.

That cutting process is important. It reveals the parts of the brick that are normally hidden inside a wall: ribs, cavities, extrusion marks, different clay bodies and firing tones. In the columns, all of that stays visible.

His work sits between sculpture, object and architecture, with brick at the centre of it. Not treated as a background material, but as something to look at closely, take apart and build with again.

They’re hanging out in the corridor for a little while longer, just outside Aurélien’s atelier, before making their way to Hong Kong.

Behind the scenes at Piet Hein Eek, where the wonderful Nard showed us around the studio and factory where their furniture and ceramics come to life.

OPEN ATELIERS — 10 YEARS OF ZAVENTEM ATELIERS

In 2016, we got the keys to this incredible building.

It was huge, raw, mostly empty, and full of possibilities. Together with our team, we started working on a dream: to create a place where makers could work side by side, share knowledge, experiment, build, fail, start again, and grow together.

Ten years later, Zaventem Ateliers is home to an incredible community of designers, artists and makers.

So on September 26, we open all the doors.

Come wander through the building, enter the ateliers, meet the makers, see what they are working on and celebrate 10 years of this crazy adventure with us.

LES CHEMINÉES DE LA LAINIÈRE — OPUS I

Trois gestes. Trois temps. Une même mémoire.

OPUS I — Extraction
Des briques issues de l’ancien site sont extraites, transportées puis cassées collectivement. Les gestes se répètent, les corps s’activent, et ce labeur devient lui-même une première forme de l’œuvre.
De cette production collective naît un ruban de briques concassées d’une vingtaine de mètres. Installation éphémère et land art urbain, il constitue la trace visible de cette énergie commune.
Le ruban n’est pas une finalité : il est une réserve de matière. Après sa disparition, ses fragments seront récupérés pour devenir la matière première des futures ombres rouges.

Trois gestes. Trois temps. Une même mémoire.

OPUS III — Apparition
 Apparaît alors l’œuvre monumentale : les ombres des anciennes cheminées de La Lainière, à Roubaix et Wattrelos. Réalisées à partir des briques provenant de la démolition des bâtiments industriels, elles deviennent les reliques d’un monde disparu.
Commandée dans le contexte de la transformation territoriale et économique du site, l’œuvre interroge ce qui demeure après la disparition. Des ruines naît une autre forme de vie.

OPUS II — édification Les fragments issus du ruban sont récupérés, assemblés et cloutés dans du béton teinté rouge. Le geste répété fait à nouveau surgir la notion de travail performatif et collectif. La matière est transformée comme le territoire lui-même.

At Maison&Objet Paris 2024, we presented Radical Anthropocene, our vision of what hospitality can become when it is shaped by people rather than products. Instead of creating a conventional hotel installation, we built an environment where architecture, furniture, art and craftsmanship formed a single living ecosystem.

The installation unfolded as a village of elevated volumes, inviting visitors to wander through a sequence of spaces with different atmospheres and uses. More than thirty artists, designers and makers contributed to the project, each bringing their own language while becoming part of a larger whole.

Rather than celebrating abundance through consumption, we explored abundance through relationships. Between disciplines, between materials, between objects and the people who make and use them. Every element kept its own identity, yet together they created something that could only exist collectively.

Radical Anthropocene was both an installation and a statement of intent. It reflects the way we work as a studio: bringing together diverse makers, embracing different perspectives, and creating spaces where collaboration becomes the architecture itself.
