Scarecrows, voodoo dolls, jack-o-lanterns

Since ancient times people have made physical representations of their darkest fears, thoughts and worries. Some were meant to be destroyed as a representation of conquering the seasons, enemies, and other trials and tribulations.

Others are made to ward off things that meant them harm, as a way to control the dark and use it against their enemies.
Some are made to mimic real things in an attempt to harness and control them.

Through all these examples humans have used sculpture as a way to create figures that have ulterior purposes beyond just decoration and aesthetics.
How does that history apply to the contemporary spaces and what are some examples from the here and now?

My largest piece to date, “Rising Above,” is 18” x 18”. (Yes, I realize that isn’t actually that big—but all those layers of resin also make this my heaviest piece yet, weighing in at a whopping 14 pounds!) I love the umbrellas making their way from the darkness upward toward the sunlight. There’s something hopeful about that movement, but I’ll let you decide what you see in it. “Rising Above” will be part of my upcoming show, Stories in Layers, at Auric Gallery in Colorado Springs, opening Friday, October 2. I’m so excited to finally share this one!

“Becoming” is one of the many pieces I’ll be sharing in my upcoming show, Stories in Layers, opening Friday, October 2 at Auric Gallery in Colorado Springs. I’m thrilled to be having my first ever show at this beautiful gallery! I’ve loved bringing these pieces together around the themes of connection, memory, change, and the stories we carry with us. I hope you’ll come see the show! 💛
