For this one, I’m pairing six beloved Latine treats with book recommendations by Latine authors based on their vibes. We’ve got romance, fantasy, horror, family drama, and everything in between. A little sweetness, a little spice, and maybe some emotional damage. 😂

Latine Heritage Month may be over, but celebrating our cultura and supporting the people who tell our stories shouldn’t end when the calendar changes.

Inspired by the amazing @author_r.c.luna , who started this beautiful spotlight, and I loved the idea so much that I wanted to keep it going! A huge thank-you to her for reminding us how important it is to celebrate, support, and uplift one another. After all, that’s what comunidad is all about, and there’s always room to spread more love!

So today, here’s THE HIGHLIGHT: people & places who continue to champion our stories and amplify underrepresented voices all year long.

The House of Gardenias by Isabel Cañas

As a fan of YA, Isabel Cañas newest YA Gothic debut was perfection and held the same eerie and haunted imagery that she has mastered in all her other books. The way the house and ghostly encounters are described had me fully immersed.

Set in a resemblance to colonial Mexico, this book references political turmoil with highlighting the historical injustices faced and social issues that have surrounded Ygnacio, Minerva, and those past and present.

Minerva is an impoverished maid who has been forsaken by her brothers and thus finds a job working for Encarnación Del Valle, a old widow who with time wins her loyalty. After having to retreat to the family’s rural estate, the remainder of the family treats Minerva as beneath them and makes it difficult for her. Not only does Minerva have to deal with the judgements but she also starts seeing dark presences around the home.

With old spirits looming around the house and the process of collecting Chispas the story starts to turn more dark and the tensions start to build. When Minerva learns more about the past through Ygnacio she starts to make her own decisions and starts to learn what side to stand on.

With subtle romance and potentially falling for a ghost, I think the sprinkle of romance in this book has the right amount and a tender beginning that encapsulates the young love of a YA book.

Ticked off the @goodreads Hispanic Heritage challenge with this one. It's a feel good easy read, finished it in a day. Recommended if you want a book that needs no thinking.

Honestly, thank you Goodreads for putting this in the Hispanic Heritage challenge because I don’t know if I would’ve found this book or author otherwise.

I was hooked from page one and it was a short read too so I finished it in less than a day. This was such a beautiful story, and as a mom, it hit me right in the feels. My only complaint is that I wanted more. Everything wraps up well, but it felt a little too fast and I wasn’t ready to leave these characters behind.
