You and you alone are in the driver’s seat of your health.

Via @ashleydaniels.coaching

No, you cannot control everything, (and honestly it’s too exhausting to even try controlling anything other than yourself… but you’re already seeing that 😮‍💨). So while you can’t control every factor that influences your condition, you DO have ultimate control over the biggest things that affect your health.

You are in control of:
✨ What you eat
✨ When and how you move your body
✨ The makeup, shampoo and body wash you use (basically anything you put on your skin)
✨ What you consume (what/who you are watching, listening to, spending time with)

THESE ALL MATTER!

When you take your power back, you find it is possible to:
⚡️Reduce your symptoms
⚡️ Eliminate your flares
⚡️ Break free from your diagnosis
⚡️ Feel GOOD in your body

It is NOT impossible to heal after an autoimmune diagnosis. This is NOT a life sentence.

You know this isn’t how your life is meant to be. You know deep down something isn’t right and your desire and drive to figure out what’s happening is exactly why you’ll be the woman who overcomes the odds.

When you focus on what IS within your control, you ate able to re-calculate the outcome of your condition and take back your health.

If your looking for a different way to heal, one that empowers you instead of leaving you feeling lost, comment “Thrive” for my 4 Steps to Healing guide.

If you’re a woman with an autoimmune disorder, chances are pretty good you have nervous system dysfunction too.

And by pretty good I mean 100% you do.

I mean how could you not?

❗️You stay on high alert, constantly monitoring your body for symptoms.
❗️Go to bed not knowing how you’ll wake up feeling the next day.
❗️Feeling bad is just normal now, but you’re always wondering how much worse could it get.
❗️And no one else in your life, despite their best intentions, gets how you feel on a daily basis.

Stressful doesn’t even cover it. 😮‍💨

Doing whatever you can to soothe and support your nervous system will go a long way in helping you recover and heal from autoimmune.

One easily missed clue that your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight is in how fast you’re eating.

The cool thing is once you recognize this is happening, it’s one of the easiest ways to calm your nervous system, and get you into a practice of healing your nervous system multiple times a day!

Next time you sit down to eat (yes, sitting down is step one), try this:

⏸️ Pause before you take your first bite. Digestion starts before you eat. Notice the colors, texture and scents of your meal. Give thanks for how the food is going to nourish your body.
😬 Chew each bite well. Chew at least 20 times before swallowing your food, more for tougher foods like meat. Breaking each bite down helps with digestion (more nutrients absorbed and less bloating!)
🍴 Put your utensils down between bites. This one feels weird at first, but it will make you chew more.
🥩 Protein first. Eating protein before carbs can help with blood sugar regulation which helps nervous system function.
📱Put your phone down. Stop distracted eating so you can concentrate your food (helps with digestion) and who is eating with you.
⏰ Aim for 20 minute meals, giving you time to recognize cues from your body that you are getting full.

Life is busy, but how you eat is something you have full control over. Your nervous system needs rest to repair. Give it some love next time you eat.

We all know we should exercise, but workouts can be tricky when you have autoimmune.

You don’t want to overdo it and cause a flare, you may have limitations because body parts don’t move as well as they use to, or you just don’t have the energy to exercise.

If any of these reasons have kept you from moving in the past, I have good news! There are so many ways to exercise with autoimmune and the benefits from moving your body are too good to pass up!

As a personal trainer who myself was diagnosed with autoimmune conditions and works with women with autoimmune, I know it’s possible to workout, flare free, in ways that work for you, exactly where you are right now!

One of the best pieces of advice I can give you is to give low impact exercises a try.

These workouts combine slower, gentler movements that keep you from pushing your body too hard and overdoing it. No running, jumping or feeling like your heart is about to explode out of your chest.

Low impact exercises increase energy levels and joint mobility, strengthen bones (which can be affected by your disorder itself, or certain autoimmune medications), improve anxiety and regulate hormones (which affects so many women with autoimmune).

If you’re ready to feel better, move easier and reduce your symptoms, start with strength training, easy cardio or stretching. No matter what phase of autoimmune healing you are in, these exercises can work for you.

Need some modifications specific to how you can move right now? Send @ashleydaniels.coaching a message and she’ll get you some ideas to help you exercise without worry.

Working out with autoimmune can be challenging.
If traditional push-ups are too much right now, here’s a great modification to try.

Cobra Push-ups! 🐍

This easier version of a push-up focuses on strengthening your shoulders, arms and upper back, but takes less power to perform because you aren’t involving your entire body for the move.

I love using these when clients who have lower mobility issues or injuries, or beginners who aren’t yet able to do a full blown push-up.

⭐️ How To: ⭐️

⚡️Start by lying down on your stomach with your body in a straight line.

⚡️Place your hands to the sides of your body, inline with your chest. If you’re even with your armpits, your hands are too high. Lower rib cage, they are too low. Keep your hands tucked close to your body.

⚡️Slowly push yourself away from the ground, so that only your chest, stomach and hips lift off the ground. You want to keep the front of your legs still and “glued” to the ground as you move through the push-up.

⚡️Lower back to the ground and repeat. (Aim for 3 sets of 10 cobra push-ups and work your way up from there 💪🏼).

*Note- Your arms will not fully straighten in this exercise. Fully extending your arms in this position can cause an over extension of the lower back. Keep elbows in close to your body and bent through the push-up.

🐍 You can modify this push-up even further by doing a baby cobra, only lifting your chest off the ground for small pulses.

No matter what your current level of fitness, or what mobility issues you have, there’s an exercise or a modification to make the move work for you!

Some encouragement from our Autoimmune Sisters Wellness Coach, Ashley to never give up hope! @ashleydaniels.coaching

Be a unicorn, because no one thinks those exist either.

✨ Recovering your health is possible
✨ Healing from autoimmune is real
✨ You can have a normal life again

But to get there, you can’t keep doing what you’ve always done. 1) It’s not working and 2) What you’ve always done may have contributed to you getting sick in the first place.

Autoimmune disorders come about because of a combination of underlying issues. What you eat, how you deal with stress, when and how you exercise, the products you use in your home, the way you talk to yourself and what you are watching and listening to all play a role in your health and these very things can determine if you heal or not.

So now it’s time to do things a little differently.

✨ Figure out what works for you
✨ Block out distractions and naysayers
✨ Keep going

Don’t worry about doing it perfectly. Just get started and things will start falling into place.

Know you need to make some changes, but feel stuck on what to do next? Reach out! My DMs are always open and I’m here to help you feel good again @ashleydaniels.coaching

Every day is a new opportunity to heal. Let’s go!

Great info from our Wellness Provider, Ashley! @ashleydaniels.coaching

If you have an autoimmune condition and are looking for ways to reduce your symptoms naturally through diet, you’re in the right place!

One food you can start enjoying that will give you big benefits towards good autoimmune health is sweet potatoes!

This one food supports your heart, brain, eyes, digestive system, blood pressure, and immune system all while also helping to prevent new problems from creeping up.

🍠 High in vitamin A, C, potassium and manganese, these veggies help your body regulate blood sugar, break down fats, boost the immune system, and repair connective tissue.

🍠 Sweet potatoes have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds which means they help reduce chronic inflammation, one of the main contributors to autoimmune symptoms, and protect your cells against damage that can be caused by free radicals.

🍠 Sweet potatoes are great for gut health too! Their fiber stimulates growth of good bacteria for your microbiome and rebuilds the lining of your intestines to heal from leaky gut. The gut is connected to so many functions of your body, and more and more evidence is coming out that leaky gut is a large contributor to chronic health problems.

🍠 You can cook them just about anyway you want too! You can mash ‘em, sauté ‘em, or bake ‘em. Make french fries, add to a breakfast hash, use as your base when making a meal bowl… the sky is the limit with these guys and you can stay as simple or get as creative as you want to.

🍠 Sweet potatoes are also generally approved in all autoimmune specific diets. Whether you’re eating Paleo, AIP, Mediterranean, or just focusing on eating less inflammatory foods, sweet potatoes are A-ok.

I didn’t really eat sweet potatoes until I started experimenting in the kitchen when I cut out gluten and needed some new options. Now they are a go-to and have become a favorite for my whole family.

So what about you? Are you already eating sweet potatoes or does this give you a new option to try?
