Oba Adenle Samuel Adisa: The One Who Drinks Water from the Fish

On April 4, 1944, the inhabitants of Osogbo crowned a monarch, leader, and companion who, in the words of the distinguished historian Ulli Beier in the “Special Independence Issue of Nigeria Magazine, Nigeria 1960,” was described as: “this enlightened ruler is worth encountering… cheerful, tolerant, and remarkably generous… He can engage in discussions on any topic under the sun… has a delightful sense of humor.”

Osogbo, a small and tranquil Yoruba town, which literally translates to “The Wizards of the Forest,” crowned Oba Adenle Samuel Adisa as the ‘Ataoja,’ meaning “The One Who Drinks Water from the Fish’s Mouth.” This piece provides a brief insight into the life of the individual who transformed the Osogbo people.

Adetifewa, a spirited and disciplined young man, grew up and wed Ayokunnu, affectionately known as ‘Kunnu of Ile Olubarin. This union produced a son, Adeleye. Tragically, Adeleye passed away young, but not before he and his spouse, Awojumoke—sometimes referred to as Olajumoke, daughter of Adifa Ile Aleegun—had a child in the early years of the 20th century. Awojumoke’s mother hailed from Ile Aganna. The baby boy, born around January 1903, was named Adenrele (Adenle) Adisa Adeleye.

Adenrele’s father’s name, “Adeleye,” became his middle name, while his given name, “Adenrele” or Adenle, became his surname. Ile Oluawo was not a Christian household, and Adenle would grow up before “Samuel” was added to his name upon becoming a Christian.
