I wasn't really prepared for what this book was about. I thought it was a romance which it is, in part, but I didn't realize it is really about one woman's struggle to stay sober and how that affects her life in work, family, and relationships.

Emma is an alcoholic with a tense relationship with her family. She compartmentalises parts of herself, showing people what she thinks they need to see (think work Emma, fun Emma, etc). Life is exhausting when we feel we have to be a certain person to different groups. Do we remember how to behave? What to say? Emma finally realizes she is none of those façades, and that she needs to figure out who she is for real. Emma also has a complicated relationship with her dad (also an alcoholic) and Robinson dealt with that aspect of the novel well.

The most poignant moment in the story for me is when Emma realises that just because she is sober, it doesn't mean everything is perfect. Life's issues don't disappear because she isn't drinking - she just happens to see them more clearly.

If you have seen previous reviews of mine, you’ll see that this is not usually the type of book I go for. However, I really enjoyed it.

It’s my birthday!!🎂📚🎁🫶

Since I’m turning 23, I’ve decided to share 23 books that I recommend ALL THE TIME!! I love these books and these authors SO MUCH; they’ve truly shaped who I am as a person, so they should be honored today as well! I literally can’t express how excited all of these books make me, so if you haven’t read them all…WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!? Jk😅😅

I’ve had such a wonderful year, and I’m so excited to see what this next year has to hold for me! I’m already looking forward to a bookish weekend trip with my friends, two weddings in the family, more time with Bella, and more reading, of course!
