It was my first year in photography school, and the final assignment for the Studio Lighting I class was to produce a series of portraits using at least two modelling lights. Eavesdropping on my classmates (We never really got along; I guess they found me obnoxious and pretentious — and most likely I was), I heard them brainstorming about having family members, friends, and a pregnant woman to pose as their subjects, but I wanted to make a lasting impression. I was 19 and going out a lot, and meeting so many people in the burgeoning Panama art scene. One of them was a young artist I had briefly met at a bar in Casco Viejo, and whose drawings I was particularly drawn to: @gabrielahandal I admired her work as much as her refusal to relent to public opinion and prejudice; her look was her own, and her attitude went accordingly — she was a perfect muse. After she agreed to be my model, I went wild, drafting ideas and concepts, and finally landed on creating a heightened version of her: a widow-esque persona, vulnerable in her own strength. In my creative spur, I decided to also produce with my own hands everything that would eventually be in the frame: a veil and a flower crown, a lace choker with a rosary, and a black bra that I embellished with pins and baubles and cameos I had found in thrift shops around the city — the bracelets and were her own. The photos were a total success; they even got me a spot in my first group exhibition, hosted in the same gallery-bar where Gabriela and I had met a few months before our collaboration. 🤗 -————————————— That grin is unmistakable. 😁 Several materials from @smoothon were used to create this detailed bust of Alfred E. Neuman. ECOFLEX™ 00-30 provides a particularly soft and flexible silicone casting, while PLAT-CAT™ accelerates the curing process and THI-VEX™ is used to thicken the silicone when needed. SMOOTH-CAST™ 65D was also used as part of the build. The final result is a true team effort: sculpting and painting by schellsculpturestudio, silicone casting by @staceylintz, and hair punching and styling by @avemonsters. 🤗 #kaupoplankenhorn #ideenformen #smoothon #smoothonproducts #moldmaking
