Good arguments, borrowed. Five rooms I can’t stop looking at, and the tension that’s doing all the work. 1. Coral velvet under a lacquered green ceiling. Opposites on the color wheel, turned all the way up. (@averycoxdesign, photo @[ANNIE SCHLECHTER]) 2. A pink striped pillow against a red bed and chintz florals. The colors are close but never quite match, and that near-miss is what makes it interesting. (@reddkaihoi) 3. A graphic, wobbly check against a soft chinoiserie mural. Hard lines meeting delicate brushwork. (@reddkaihoi) 4. Cool aqua walls with an earthy brown sofa and pops of chartreuse. Cold, warm, and one sharp note that keeps the room from going sleepy. (@averycoxdesign, photo @[STEPHEN KARLISCH]) 5. A plum grasscloth table anchoring a pale, paneled room, with a tartan chair talking over the blue-and-white. (@[AVREA & COMPANY], photo @[NATHAN SCHRODER]) Tension isn’t chaos. It’s two things that are almost related, placed close enough to argue. #interiordesign #maximalism #newtraditional #colorfulinteriors #bastetinteriors

This wallpaper, titled “Eden,” features snakes and strawberries in a lush garden design and serves as the cornerstone for this room’s design. It was one of the first things my clients and I fell in love with - a holdover from the first project we started together but that got put on hold for a variety of reasons. What luck that we had a chance to bring it into the fold for this house! We searched for the perfect shade of strawberry pink to lacquer the vanity with and paired it with the green stone countertop. I had fun selecting this cheeky little apple mirror because… you know. A lively powder room for a lovely family! Photography by @annieschechter Styling by @mieketenhave Built by @dianelewispeck

The world of Atelier Vime. While in Paris for deco off a couple of years ago I had the pleasure of touring this private apartment where @ateliervime has installed many of their beautiful goods. It was an incredible way to see the city and familiarize myself with their product. This trip has stuck with me in so many ways and I am constantly revisiting my photos for inspiration! Scroll through for layered artistic dreaminess. I’ll never forget how cold I was on this trip! This Texan was not prepared. Right off the bat the tile and the railing in this entry was incredible. The full picnic basket set 💕 Klee colors and #rugdesign Cutest little spot! Love the idea to hang two little lights instead of just one. Hi! I was freezing and @andreechalaron was chic Who doesn’t love a little religious iconography in the mix The most vibrant juicy orange with the little green glass wall candelabra was perfection. Daybed dreaming Bye!!

Tucked under the stairwell and disguised behind a secret door is a hidden wet bar perfect for mixing up a cocktail for dinner guests. We sourced an artisanal brass faucet from Morocco to pair with the mottled glazed tile from @sarah_balineum . Sticking the seascape up on the the underside of the stair was a clever move that I love and came together the day of the photoshoot. I love how this image captures so much of what I love about this project, the jauntiness of a real collected over time feel, the custom artistry we incorporated throughout, the mix of traditional and folk-y pieces, and the determination to squeeze little moments of magic throughout the available squarefootage. Photo by @annieschlechter Styling by @mieketenhave Built by @dianelewisdesign Keywords: Custom chinoiserie mural wallpaper, bespoke painted sideboard, English tortoise shell tile, secret closet bar, jib door, wainscot.

Here we are looking in to the lively kitchen through from the dining room that is wrapped in a custom chinoiserie wallpaper that I had custom designed. It features our clients favorite flora and fauna from the Texas region and is set on a sherbet-y ground which compliments the soft pink color of the cabinets. We used a number of antiques and family heirlooms as well as our clients personal collection of art and objet throughout this home. Finding places for them was such a fun part of styling this project. From the dinnerware collection handed down from our clients grandmother that now decorates the kitchen hood, to the beautiful hand painted ceramic vase on the antique chest. This project is personal and collected. Originally published in the Dallas Morning News @dmn_abode section, this restored Georgian was saved by our preservation minded clients. These buildings are truly special and with the right team, these old homes can be reimagined thoughtfully for the next generation. More from this darling Dallas nursery… the large cabana stripe on the shades lends a not so serious air to the space while the palette will easily age up with this kiddo. Playfulness and agency is the name of the game in this children’s room, soft modular furniture, cozy rug, accessible toys and room to run around make for lovely play sessions! Of course, every kids rooms needs some vintage pieces and family heirlooms to give it soul. Here is a close up of a custom bookshelf we designed for a narrow bedroom entry in this Dallas home. The idea was low, safe storage so kids could explore and pull whatever caught their interest off the shelf themselves... a la Montessori. The diamond shape on the doors gives a hint at what is hiding within, and the okra green brings some life to what was otherwise an awkward little space. Have a tricky nook in your home you don’t know what to do with? Tell me about it in the comments! Photography @annieschlechter Styling @mieketenhave See more from this project here: #acdfairfaxave #interiordesign #kidsroomdesign #customstorage

Thinking about redoing a room before everyone descends for the holidays? Now is the time to start thinking about it! I have a few spots open on @theexpert to help with exactly that. This headboard, from a project in Dallas, is pink silk with a canary velvet tape trim, just enough to give the expanse of pink some structure. Underneath the canopy I put a fairly workaday olive linen check next to a delicate floral, which is a pairing I keep returning to, something a bit graphic and structured sitting alongside something humble and unstudied. The squiggle lamp and the lacquered chest do the same job in three dimensions. Every room needs a bit of that push/pull. Photography by @annieschlechter , styling by @mieketenhave If you’d like help thinking through your own space, I’d love to meet with you on @theexpert, which books consultation sessions worldwide. Comment below and I’ll send over details to view availability. See more of this project here: #acdfairfaxave #interiordesign #pinkbedroom #patternmixing

One of my favorite things to do for our projects is to create something entirely new. For this sherbet colored kitchen we decided to design our own hardware for the space. Carved out of white oak and meant to resemble the shape sand makes under the waves near the shore, we designed 3 shapes to be applied across the different door sizes. Swipe to see the rest of the space as well as some progress shots and sketches of other custom pieces we have designed and fabricated in the past. @lisafinetextiles has a compelling firsthand account of the power of textiles to transform a room — and a life. It was 30 years ago on her first trip to India when the Dallas-based textiles designer decided she wanted to work in the medium. For two decades, she traveled through the country’s small villages and cities, meeting designers and weavers whose crafts could be traced back multiple generations. Today, Fine is making fine fabrics more accessible than ever. But don’t mistake “fine” for “fussy.” Decorating with textiles is a practice in embracing imperfection. At the link in our bio, read the tips Fine, @averycoxdesign and the founder of rug brand @dfwtextilesourcing have to share with us.
