Last weekend emphasized how emotional the second week in October is for me. On Oct. 12, it marked 10 years since my father died. However, on Oct. 10, we celebrated my mother’s 95th birthday!
I’m so grateful for the parents that God gave me. I could write so much about them both but I’ll show restraint. I’ll just say that I miss my father incredibly and still strive toward the example he set. My mother (whom I truly didn’t expect to live 10 years past my father) is simply awe inspiring. Two random tidbits about her - she was Dr. Martin Luther King’s secretary in the early 1960s and she was my 5th grade teacher in elementary school. So that means she stood at the epicenter of one of this country’s great social movements and that I experienced her in her profession and can attest to how wonderful she was as a teacher.
My siblings and I ambitiously planned three birthday celebrations in three locations in one day for a 95 year old. As my brother accurately stated, since we were too old to party all night, we partied all day!😆
The pictures are a collection of my mother this weekend and older shots of my parents.

~2023 Outtakes and Reflection~
I’m still shocked today is the last day of the year tbh. I spent the last 9 months in therapy and it’s helped me unravel some long time stressors. I did not do much music this year because I needed to find my happiness. Creating felt more like a chore than a joy so I spent my time exercising, listening to podcasts, and watching chaotic documentaries because I love a good documentary 😂

I was reminded through my job how important it is to serve well and to show up well. Life taught me how essential rest is. How valuable conversations with family and loved ones are regardless of how challenging they may be. God showed up for me at my lowest and reminded me that the choice to keep living will eventually prove that my future truly does outweigh my past.

I’m moving into 2024 releasing control. Freeing myself to be even more present and being okay with all my ducks not always being in a row. I intend to allow myself to relish in moments of rest, love, and serenity as much as possible. It is my hope that my choice to be present will reflect God’s patience and thoughtfulness to others.

I hope you all enjoy the last day of 2023 and walk into 2024 with excitement and grace to yourself.

Jaja’’s African Hair Braiding is incredible! I’m so grateful that I was able to witness such an historic night on Broadway this week with my family. Congratulations @jjbioh. You‘ve created an iconic body of work.

Summerstock mini-reunion, celebrating our dear kind brilliant Colty boy and his Tony nom. So much love all around in this pic. Swipe all the way to see college sophomore Colton soaring on Craig Carnelia’s “What You’d Call a Dream” (with my mini-orchestration and me at the piano).
