📚 Journeys in Natural Dyeing & The Modern Natural Dyer

Store Chronicles just added California to the map. London, Memphis, Austin, Nashville — and now two shops that couldn’t have been more different from each other, both worth the stop.

Walked into the first one with zero idea who I was about to meet. Turns out the woman helping me was Kristine — she and her wife, Adrienne, own A Verb for Keeping Warm together, and Kristine’s the one behind The Modern Natural Dyer and every skein on that wall, which is entirely their own VERB line — and she just... chatted with me for twenty minutes like it was nothing. She said she would look me up next time she’s in Nashville but I’m sure she says that to all the girls😉

Their house line is dyed right there in the Oakland studio using flowers, bark, and leaves. Their label says it better than I can: “such acts embody love and creativity.” They also carry beautiful yarn from other dyers — La Bien Aimée’s display alone could’ve kept me there another hour. I came home with the blue and the gold speckled VERB skeins. Yes, to having luxury socks💙

And then, bonus — Ksenia Naidyon, author of One Skein Knitting, was there teaching a class that day. I got to talk to her for a few minutes too, and she was just as warm and down-to-earth as Kristine. Two women who’ve genuinely shaped how people think about small-batch, single-skein knitting, both in one little shop, both happy to just talk yarn with a stranger.

Second stop was close to the wedding we were in town for, and it had the best “crafters support chair” I’ve seen — my husband appreciated that one more than the yarn, honestly. Came home with a skein of Urth Yarns Uneek Fingering, and a new appreciation for the man who sits patiently through every single one of these stops.

Tell me — have you ever wandered into a shop and had no idea you were standing next to someone famous in the craft world?
