Some watch dials can’t be truly captured in photos.

At the Toronto Timepiece Show, I got a closer look at AWAKE’s Son Mài Guilloché collection, including the green Borealis, purple Sunset and orange Alba.

Each dial combines hand-cut guilloché with layers of traditional Vietnamese lacquer. The Fragments Green takes a different approach by setting pieces of mother-of-pearl into the lacquer.

Then there’s the lume. Polished steel caps sit inside BGW9 Super-LumiNova, allowing the edges of the hands and markers to create an incredible blue halo.

Turn the watch over and you’ll find a La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement with a custom tungsten rotor and 68 hours of power reserve.

Tried on the @awake.concept Sơn Mài Fragments in Blue and Pink, and wow… those dials are AMAZING! 🤩💙🩷

A beautiful blend of Vietnamese lacquer craftsmanship and the Japanese art of Raden, featuring hand-placed mother-of-pearl fragments that shimmer and shift with the light. Each dial takes nearly 15 hours of handwork and multiple layers of lacquer to complete.
