“When I was a kid, I would always see my father cut some green wheat from the fields, bundle it by hand, and hang it on the living room wall where it would slowly turn from green to gold. It is an ancient Kurdish tradition our elders practiced, a symbol of freedom, peace, and a rising home.

Then the war came to Rojava, Syria, and we left everything behind. Years later, far from home in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, I saw him doing it again, the same hands, the same careful cutting, the same quiet ritual. With that bundle in his hands, everything came back, the walls of our old home, the smell of the fields, the feeling of being safe. When he hung it on the wall of our new place, it felt like home again.

This is a photograph of wheat. But more than that, it is a photograph of a man who refused to let war take everything who carried a tradition across borders and years and loss, and kept it alive with nothing more than his own two hands.

After all those years of hard times, a small bundle cut from the earth still has the power to make us feel safe, and to give us the freedom that war tried to take away.” - Awaz Saud

Endurance exhibition
What is beyond war? When and how colonialism is present?
The Kurdish experience between Endurance and Art.
Endurance will be on show at Street Gallery, IAIS, in Exeter city, it talks from the first person’s language, talks about endurance,
about days in long years of colonialism, about art as the main tool for continuation.
Photographs, film, performance, text, and archives have been displayed. They tell and they ask, most importantly; they are present
