Each year I struggle to articulate how healing, amazing, inspiring, and transformative #spelhousehomecoming can be and yet, I’m grateful for the challenge.

Of course, there’s magic and immense joy in returning home to campus, turning up, reliving those memories, & creating new ones. Obvs.

But I’ve truly been sitting with the realization that WE’RE the real magic. It’s US. We’re those once ambitious teens turned adults. We are actively shaping, changing, and saving the world as we know it. The caliber of my SpelHouse siblings is unmatched. Some of us are making impacts in our local communities while others are literally mobilizing the country to save our democracy—no exaggeration. But annually in October, for one weekend we’re all here, together, titles aside, united by our love for these institutions that were centered and founded specifically for US. Institutions that were created to be a solution, a remedy, & a balm to treat and heal our country’s greatest sin.

There are many that believe HBCUs don’t prepare you for the “real world,” and I can now say that I agree. HBCUs prepare us to be so much better. HBCUs prepare us to be better than the mediocracy and stupidity that the real world normalizes & accepts from some… hell even elects. HBCUs prepare us to be excellent and to require more from this world that isn’t kind or inclusive—to make it better. HBCUs prepare us to be proud of who we are in a world that is persistent and unwavering in its attempt to erase our existence and our humanity. HBCUs give us the confidence to know that we don’t need a seat at the table when our presence alone can shift the room.

1. Tailgate won.
2. Soul Fest was everything they said it would be.
3. Since before I was a Delta, Jos has loved Da Bruhz. And fortunately for me, I am “what Que Psi Phi can’t get enough of.”
4. The neck fan was the best decision ever.
5. My Morehouse (gate) brother @mar_leseur is also my biggest hater. 🤣
6. Psi Chapter got THE BEST Bruhz. Shout out to DURTEE, DANGERUS, and SHADY. Those are my brothers frfr.
7. I didn’t buy a ticket to tailgate, but I bought a ticket to Soul Fest.

13 years ago today, the very first show I directed in undergrad @spelman_college closed in the Baldwin Burroughs Theater! #TheStoriesofWe I will never forget that Sunday afternoon, there was an older patron who came up to me after the show and said, “young lady you directed this play?” I said, “yes sir.” He then proceeded to say, “I went to church this morning and received the message and came here to see this play this afternoon and received a message. Keep doing what you’re doing.” I said, “yes sir. Thank you.” Who knew 13 years later I will be in the process of putting together Acting Classes and private Acting Coach prices to start this Summer right here in my hometown, Savannah, Georgia! White supremacy isn’t individual acts of hate/violence. It’s institutionalized in neo-colonial Amerikkka & europe. We have to make the connections between police violence like the repression of the #stopcopcity movement & the recent killing of Ta'Kiya Young by the pigs in Ohio #sayhername to the racist murders in #jacksonville to the African liberation struggle in #nigercoup

Imagine if more of us collectively drew these conclusions & organized with shared purpose, especially in the midst of our current pandemic, climate crisis & the rise of white supremacist fascism. We’re still learning & don’t know enough yet but we’re inspired & ready to organize!
