Found a brand new, never opened film scanner in the swap shed at the dump the other day. As a result I’ve spent a couple of hours searching through some rolls of film I developed with a dear mentor back in April. I’m so pleased with what I’ve found. Tender portraits of some of the dearest homies and some soon-to-be friends, snapshots and memories from the loneliest days of the pandemic, and lots of shots from walks in my last months in Waterbury after 5 years admiring triple deckers. Maybe I’ll finish that project sometime this winter. This growing season has shown me the depths of both fulfillment and overextension. Deep apologies to all that I’m neglecting, and deep gratitude for all the support and love I receive daily, as well as the opportunity to enjoy some hobbies away from the farm. At times, I thought starting a farm was a completely unattainable goal of mine. When I first came to Jill with the idea to lease land in 2020 at the end of last summer and get my plans off the ground, I was delighted when she suggested we do this thing together (over a couple of cocktails at the bar). Though we never planned to start a business in the midst of a god damn global pandemic, I feel so grateful. Walking our fields tonight and preparing for our first harvest later this week, I feel grateful to the farms, friends, and family in our life who have made our first season possible. An opportunity for leased land, business and growing tips, a steal on a used greenhouse and other supplies, extra sets of hands for greenhouse skinning and transplanting, borrowed equipment, extra seedlings, financial contributions towards our sliding scale CSA(!), kind words of support, and patience as we neglect other obligations life throws our way. These are just some of the ways we have been supported by our community for which we will be eternally grateful, and that we will pay forward any chance we get. Connecticut is not the perfect place to start a farm. Land opportunities are scarce for beginning farmers and the cost of living (and production) makes this risk so god damn scary. But people here need food, and we think we can grow it with the care and passion it deserves. We’re making mistakes daily, and we’re learning and succeeding too.
