HORMONES // So let's talk this out. When you're out camping and you see a bear poking out of the bushes, your body goes through predictable, necessary physiological changes that are required to keep you alive. Changes that will get you to freeze & hide, or to get up & run. 🐻 If we were to do a blood draw in the middle of this bear chase, we would find your hormones were "imbalanced". Except we'd be comparing your hormones to the times when you're NOT being chased by a bear. 🐻 If we consider context, those hormonal changes would actually make perfect sense. Your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. 🐻 This is important for when you're #TTC or during #pregnancy after loss, prematurity and/or #birthtrauma. While you may KNOW you're safe, your body may not be functioning as if you're safe. 🐻 Your body, actually, is working exactly as it should given that it perceives you're still being chased by the bear. In real life, that translates to living with unresolved grief, unresolved trauma and/or chronic stress. 🐻 This is also why many women with a complicated family-building journey don't find restoration of #hormonebalance with traditional nutritional or supplement support. The hormones aren't the problem. They're a road sign that your #nervoussystem is dysregulated. 🐻 That doesn't meanto breathe more deeply or practice more gratitude. That means you have to create the physiological shifts that weren't able to happen after the bear attack so that you can get #pregnant & have a #healthypregnancy. 🐻 That is what you learn in the Path to Baby program. Trusting others and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable can be a challenge, this is specially true for people who have experienced trauma in the context of relationships. WORTHY // Birthdays are a big deal in my family so when my birthday came around after my son came home from the #NICU, my family wanted to know - in how many ways were we celebrating? 💙 I avoided calls & texts. I pushed the decision on to anyone else who would make it for me, when they wouldn't, I felt utterly paralyzed. "I don't know!" I finally shouted in tears that morning when no plans had been made. 💙 It was through those tears I could see clearly - it's not that I didn't know what to do on my birthday. It was that I didn't feel like I deserved to celebrate it after all the ways I felt my body failed my #24weeker. 💙 I see this so often in our community, whether they're a #preemiemom or a #NICUmom or experienced a #highriskpregnancy or needed an #emergencycsection. 💙 It shows up as buying everyone else new clothes or shoes when you're still wearing shirts with holes in them. Needing to justify a break for yourself by proving you're doing enough for your family. Avoiding healing because you feel you need to always remember what your body did. Because you feel you don't deserve to feel better. 💙 Did you feel that last one? I felt that deep in my body when I realized I was withholding healing from myself as a form of self-inflicted punishment for what my body had done wrong. 💙 If any of this resonates, here's what I want you to know: You are not bad at #selfcare. PREGNANCY & INFLAMMATION // Why do I talk about traumatic stress, #stressphysiology & #pregnancy so much? This is one of the reasons why. 🤰 The #nervoussystem dysregulation that happens due to trauma or stress is NOT a #mentalhealth issue. TRAUMA-INFORMED MEDICAL CARE // I have a LOT to say on this topic so let's focus on this aspect of #traumainformed medical care: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Medical providers need to stop asking patients to recount their traumatic losses & fertility/pregnancy/birth traumas multiple times even before they have seen you in their office. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How many times have you had to write down your number of pregnancies, number of living children, number of miscarriages, your pregnancy & delivery history, leaving you feeling shaky, uncomfortable, or hiding behind eyes burning with tears? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is NOT necessary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It IS necessary for your medical provider to know the context within which you are #TTC or #pregnant again. But there are far more efficient ways of addressing this. I work with my 1:1 #pregnancy clients on different ways to share their history without retraumatizing themselves. That way also, their medical team can know their story as a real-lived experience & not just data on a page. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is important for #womenofcolor , especially Black women, whose experiences of pregnancy & birth may have been traumatic due to our medical system that's built on devaluing a woman's life & not trusting a woman's concerns. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yet another way our medical system NEEDS to change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you're looking for support, my 1:1 program will help you feel safe during your #highriskpregnancy. TRAUMA & PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS // When our #nervoussystem shifts into survival mode, changes to all systems of our body occur. Some systems become more activated (e.g. we breathe faster or our heart begins to pound) and other systems slow down or shut off (e.g. digestion). 💙 When we are frozen in that state of survival (trauma) these body changes start wreaking havoc on our bodies. Two of the most common health issues I see in #NICU moms is a development of autoimmune diseases & #chronicpain. 💙 For women who want to #TTC after #fertilitytrauma , #pregnancytrauma and/or #birthtrauma, trauma resolution before you start on your #TTCjourney is critical, not just for your emotional health but for your reproductive & prenatal health as well. 💙 Trauma is rooted not in our thoughts but in our bodies.
