Under Suspicion: Tracie Andews - Road Rage Killer

Frames from my first feature length show which aired on Channel 5.

Huge thanks to Director @grantarmour for his trust and collaboration and @allaboutorchard for allowing us to be bold with such a sensitive true life case.

Would not have been possible without the incredible crew - namely @peterswinford_ac, @b_s_lite and @first_ad_lady worked tirelessly to pull off alot in a very small shooting window.

Shooting drama reconstruction for documentary is always an interesting and enjoyable challenge. As DoP’s, our instinct is to light in a way that highlights performance and draws attention to the actors. But in most reconstructions there is little to no dialogue, with the story instead being led by voiceover or interviews.

The aim becomes creating a strong sense of time, tone and place, which i achieved by letting faces fall into shadow when I might normally light them a little more. It’s about giving enough visual information without overpowering or distracting from the story.

On ‘Not For a hundred Years’, we moved between 1920s New York and 1930s/60s Hungary in the space of a single day. I leaned heavily into silhouette and shadow to build a stylised look to establish the different time periods and locations.

A great crew got us through a lot of set ups on this day:
