Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, October 10 from 2 to 5pm.

What does it mean to desire, to stand before, to be subject to, the power of Law in a time of forever wars?

𝘉𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘸 connects Kafka’s enigmatic depiction of law with Simon Leung’s 2006 curatorial project, 𝘓𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘸, to meditate on an unprecedented hostile takeover of the collective psyche by accelerated technologies of state/corporate/media collusion and their destruction of life and land, domestically and abroad.

Exhibition artworks, spanning the early 1990s to the present, reassemble the uncanny parts of real life that follow us into the place and time of waiting before the Law. Their aesthetic strategies are far-ranging: parrhesia to parody, speculative para-fiction to granular studies of materiality, redistributed auras of the indexical to extra-legal effects of the readymade. They operate in double-time and longue durée to place an arrest on “the present.” Each teaches us abiding lessons about disobedience, aesthetic, political, and otherwise, at the edge of democracy and fascism.

Stay tuned for our parallel public program.

join us TONIGHT at @now_instant for a film program realized in collaboration with @theicala in conjunction with Samar Al Summary’s current exhibition, ‘Excavating the Sky.’ ☁️🪏📽️ ‘Roaming like desert animals, we understand it’s enough to find a few leaves or drops to slip past another day’ is a film program that brings together work by artists who, like Samar, embrace the medium of film as a form of documentation, resistance, remembering, and imagination and a tool by which to cross the boundaries and borders that might otherwise keep us apart 🔗 Featured artists include: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Basma Al Sharif, Samar Al Summary, Ali Eyal, Layth Kareem, Jumana Manna and Anhar Salem, Ansam Salem, and Doody 🎞️

Many of these artists have also indelibly shaped my relationship to film, and the poetic, incisive, and transformative power of art, and I am so grateful for this chance to present their work in LA 🙏 Films will be screened on loop throughout the day from 11am to 5pm, no RSVP required. Starting at 6pm, the final run of films will be presented followed by a conversation between Samar and myself and a cozy reception.
