Victor Verhelst is a visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans digital imaging,
printmaking, textile installations and interactive technology. In his work, he explores how digital
images can break free from the screen and take on a tangible, physical form.
A key starting point within his practice is Trippy Vegas, a constantly evolving digital universe in
which hyper-saturated architecture and surreal urban spaces converge. Verhelst translates
these virtual environments into prints, textiles, objects and installations.
The tension between the virtual and the physical is particularly evident in his textile works.
Digital aesthetics take on a material presence and become part of an environment that can not
only be viewed but also experienced spatially

Expanding his footprint in the public realm, Verhelst will unveil a permanent site-specific artwork for the reopening of the Design Museum Gent in the autumn of 2026.

by EMMA DESIREE COMER

Textile Artist

No more hiding!! Let’s unpack & reveal !
Fresh from the framer and soon to be seen at the upcoming exhibition TALKING THREADS

20.09.26 - 18.10.26

With curators @han.decorte & @sophiedesomere
—-
Emma Desirée Comer works at the intersection of weaving and sculpture. Using discarded fishing ropes as her primary medium, she explores tension as both a physical and conceptual force through weaving and knotting. In her woven works, she translates the structural qualities, tension, and tactile character of rope into tapestries, while her sculptural practice reimagines the material through processes of transformation and traditional craft techniques.

Victor Verhelst is a Belgian visual artist operating at the intersection of digital media, spatial design, and material innovation. Rooted in the ongoing digital universe of ‘TRIPPY VEGAS’—a self-expanding virtual metropolis—his autonomous practice translates digital canvases into tangible, physical mediums. Verhelst’s aesthetics are defined by the distortion and juxtaposition of 2D and 3D image planes, resulting in a distinct dialogue between pre-made digital imagery and traditional tactility, spanning risography, large-scale textile, and interactive gaming technologies.
At the end of June 2020, he left the ‘Les Monseigneurs’ collective, of which he was a co-founder, to pursue his own course. Since then, Verhelst has worked on several art-projects.

Deeply committed to local industry and craftsmanship, Verhelst frequently collaborates with regional manufacturers, as demonstrated by his textile installation developed with Fedustria for the WONDER Creativity Festival. His multidisciplinary approach bridges the gap between contemporary art, commercial innovation, and public space, having executed projects for prominent cultural institutions alongside commissions for corporate partners like Volvo and spatial integration projects for the Dutch Government Architect (Rijksbouwmeester).
Verhelst’s work has garnered significant national and international acclaim. He was awarded the public prize for ‘Young Belgian Talent’ at the Sabato Design Awards, and received a bronze accolade at the Henry van de Velde Awards 2026 for his debut publication, which has also received multiple international recognitions in graphic design competitions. Expanding his footprint in the public realm, Verhelst will unveil a permanent site-specific artwork for the reopening of the Design Museum Gent in the autumn of 2026.

Looking back at BADAFF 2026 at the Arsenaal site in Ghent

/ It was a pleasure of co-curating the Belgian Art and Design Affair 2026 together with Thomas De Ben @thomasdeben @badaff.be

/ For the curated space I had the privilege of creating a light installation, in dialogue with the venue and the industrial character of the space ->

12 monumental paper lamps were dispersed over the site, adding a warm touch amid the bright fair lights.

-

The Cardboard and Glazed Paper Lamps are crafted from recycled cardboard, glazed paper and connected with steel nuts and bolts.

-

The glazed paper shades are realized from mulberry paper which afterwards is finished with a bio-coating. This creates a strong material with an almost transparent glazed look. For the darker (walnut) shades I hand painted the paper with natural oils and inks, resulting in graphical variations, highlighting a variety of nuances of brown. Because of this handcrafted process every piece has its unique drawings. They become even more apparent when the light is turned on; a soft glow is filtered through the shade and creates a slumbering atmosphere.

-

The recycled cardboard profiles come from the packaging industry, normally used for protecting borders of larger shipments. At the end of the paper recycling cycle these profiles are often considered as single use, most of the time being damaged to protect the shipment. Here, on the other hand, I upscale them by reinforcing the surface with walnut ink and a bio certified lacquer.

These monumental lights celebrate the versatility of paper by utilising paper of various life stages, considering its afterlife and transforming an everyday material into precious building components.

At BADAFF, I presented a selection of my sculptural jewelry. Each piece invites a direct encounter between material, form and viewer.
