Publishing, in Theory

New episode of the Books and Their Makers podcast on Radio MoLI @moli_museum

A great pleasure to listen to @badaud_e and @temmuzsr read from each other's new books/zines, and to talk about how critical theory can be made accessible to a broader readership, what role publishers play in this process, academia and precarity, & creative ways of navigating the publishing world

Some of the books I read & returned to over the six years I was writing She Was Wild Grass 🌱 Even if they aren't explicitly mentioned in my book, they informed my thinking, aesthetics, & politics, and I'm indebted to them and their authors.

(A few are old library books with stickers on the spine that obscure the authors' last names, but Minor Characters is by Joyce Johnson & Silences is by Tillie Olsen)

Out Now! Autotheory and Its Others!

Ever since Maggie Nelson’s Argonauts gave the word fresh currency a decade ago, autotheory has infiltrated scholarly, literary, and artistic practices. Autotheory and Its Others contributes to this nascent metacritical conversation. An inclusive discourse, autotheory embraces its uncanny double, allotheory, and, thus, this collection invites to the table a host of uncanny others: psychoanalysis, queer theory, and crip theory as well as art writing, postcriticism, and autofiction, among other genres and discourses.
Bringing together four editors and thirteen contributors from both sides of the Atlantic, this collection of critical and creative-critical essays grapples with what it means to couple the personal with the theoretical. The volume’s chapters feature geographical settings as far-flung as New Zealand, Iran, and Mississippi and its wide-ranging topics include anecdotal theory and dialogia–theoria, the bodymind and illness, artificial intelligence and experimentation, accident and fantasy, collages and fragments, unlearning and autopractices, unknowing and the unconscious, uncertainty and art writing, narcissus and trauma, kudzu and pedagogy, memory and legend, autofabulation and religion, and lo-fi critique and academia. Ultimately, Autotheory and Its Others showcases this emergent genre’s diversity while also charting its multivalent future directions.

maybe the 20th century capitalism has finally been conquered by what we call unrealism: a comparatively skill-less genre of art made from arts, for the lolz, just to see what machines can do. if modernism brought the everyday into the studio, ai art brings the studio into the everyday. the demuseumification of the object — its virtual proliferation, its abundance, its reproductivity — smashes the decontextualisation of objects. we are multiple. we contain multitudes.

Book Presentation: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐟𝐟

During the opening week, we presented our new publication, The Vibes Are Off, a book born from a vague sense of unease—the feeling that something isn’t quite right, difficult to explain yet impossible to ignore. It brings together our compulsive interpretations, manic confessions, and spiraling trains of thought: attempts to make sense of the things that both disturb and fascinate us.

In a similar vein, the accompanying panel discussion brought together Tihana Bertek, Barbara Gregov, Joanna Walsh, and Günseli Yalcinkaya, and was moderated by Lana Pukanić.

The Vibes Are Off features essays by 𝐀𝐥 𝐇𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐧 ✯ 𝐂𝐞𝐦 𝐀. ✯ 𝐓𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐤 ✯ 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐯 ✯ 𝐌𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐫 ✯ 𝐋𝐞𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐞 ✯ 𝐉𝐨𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐡 ✯ 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐫𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐤 ✯ 𝐆𝐮̈𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢 𝐘𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐚𝐲𝐚, alongside a visual contribution by ✯ 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐬.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to all, some, or just one of the sessions at last weekend’s pilot edition of re:verb festival.

A privilege to be able to dream up, plan, direct, produce and host this initiative - described in a report on @asymptotejrnl as “a one-of-a-kind literary festival in Ireland (and possibly the world)”.

reverb 2026 would not have been possible without the stellar work & expertise of everyone at @kirkos_ensemble. Many thanks also to Rita @cailleachbooks for the fantastic book stall, and for minding the place with me through the weekend.

Last but by no means least, big thanks to all the participating poets & artists for making this edition one of sustained excellence and innovation:
