A Major Step Towards Securing the Tukuriajhar–Dalka Elephant Corridor
The Tukuriajhar–Dalka route, connecting Naxalbari and Bagdogra, is an important elephant movement corridor in North Bengal. Elephants cross three rivers, an active railway line, and NH 327 while moving towards agricultural fields during the harvesting season.

In 2022, @airavat_trust first raised this critical issue with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and continued follow-ups in 2024 and 2025, receiving positive responses from our Honourable Minister, Shri Nitin Gadkari Ji.

The proposed highway expansion includes wildlife-friendly structures at five locations:

Kiranchandra Tea Garden: 700 m

Deomoni Tea Garden: 490 m

Sanyashi: 315 m

Atal: 100 m

Panitanki: 200 m

A 10-hectare elephant concentration zone near Panitanki is also planned to strengthen connectivity with Nepal.

We sincerely thank the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and our Honourable MP, Shri Raju Bista Ji, for supporting this conservation initiative.

This is an important step towards protecting traditional elephant routes, strengthening transboundary connectivity, and promoting long-term human–elephant coexistence across the Darjeeling Terai and Nepal border landscape.

Why is the Supreme Court in such a hurry that Chief Justice of India cannot grant a 6-month extension?

In the hearing on 7 September 2026, the Chief Justice has not accepted the High powered Committee’s prayer for a 6 months extension and directed that the Committee work day and night to submit their final report by 30 November 2026. Next date of hearing in this matter is on 2 December 2026.

Elected political leaders from Rajasthan and Haryana have written to the Supreme Court-appointed High-Powered Committee expressing serious concerns over the inadequate public consultation process and field trips carried out across the 700-km Aravalli range.

Lok Sabha Members of Parliament and legislative leaders point out that brief field visits to see beautiful areas of the Aravallis and online forms completely exclude marginal farmers, cattle herders, and adivasi communities who depend directly on the Aravallis for their survival. They have urged the Committee to see the ground reality, conduct meaningful in-person consultations across all 64 Aravalli districts.

At the Aravalli Committee's public hearing in Gurgaon, Advocate Kriti Bhatia working as part of the legal team of People for Aravallis called out the consultation process that did not hear the villagers most affected — no internet, no email, hearing times changed at the last minute, while the Western Ghats process ran 40+ structured consultations with civil society and government alike.

Then Neelam Ahluwalia, Founder, People for Aravallis described what she witnessed firsthand after five days of following the committee on ground and attending every public hearing : a mining lobby staging a "show of strength" at the Ajmer hearing — 80% of the room packed with miners — and a Girjan river site skipped entirely while people waited to show the committee the truth on the ground.

Two women, one demand: come on ground with citizens to see the destruction of the Aravallis.

We brave heavy rainfalls, unexpected landslides, walk through slippery trails, and the ever-present leeches that seem to know exactly where to find us. We spend long hours in the forest, often far from internet connectivity. We spend days at a stretch without electricity. Sometimes, there were unusually hot days, something not seen here before: a clear indication of the effect of climate change on remote areas.
But every step brings us closer to protect our icon, Ludlow's Bhutan Glory. Every small piece of new information and evidence make our enduring journey satisfying! And above all, candid moments, planned shots and camaraderie make our field days alive!

This reminds us that fieldwork isn’t always about data sheets, long walks, and careful observations. Sometimes, it’s muddy boots, unexpected adventures, and light-hearted moments that make the long hours in the field worth it!

Renowned biologist and environmental journalist Bahar Dutt takes you on a haunting journey from the chaotic fish landing centres of Eastern India to the sun-soaked state of Goa on the Western Coast... What her team uncovers will change how you look at our oceans forever.

The film covers species like Bull, Hammerhead, Silky, Bamboo, Spadenose, and Thresher sharks, including Manta Ray and many other rays species, arriving at fish landing centres.

Through heart-wrenching imagery, this film confronts the ultimate question: How do we save slow-growing apex predators without destroying the livelihoods of the traditional fishermen who depend on them? And who is really responsible for the vanishing species from our oceans?

Watch a powerful new documentary that exposes the hidden crisis beneath the waves “SOS: Save Our Sharks”. Streaming on Animal Planet & Discovery plus.
