I took copious amounts of footage for this piece, so here’s a little process reel for my 2026 Forward Warrior piece!

I had so much fun with this piece and I can’t stop staring at her now.

AND SHE IS DONE! 💗✨

My piece for Forward Warrior 2026. I couldn’t be happier with her. Thank you so much to family and friends who visited me throughout the process and who took sweet photos and videos. I’m sure I’ll have another post and definitely a reel coming up. Priority right now though is to sleep 10 hours.

If you took photos of me/my piece (or if you do in the future), please feel free to send them to me! I’d love to see ‘em.

$Cake art is already art. It is full of symbolism, communicating volumes, moving people. So what happens when someone makes art of our art? CJ Hendry’s “Cake” performance sparked our conversation. In a work meant to spotlight $30,000 bronze cake replicas, 200+ skillfully-created real cakes were used to stage a food fight. Cake is designed to be dismantled, gathered around ceremoniously, consumed, enjoyed, integrated into our bodies. Here, that ephemerality was contrasted with permanence, and it sent a clear, if unintentional, message about the imbalance between the worth of cake art vs. of facsimiles rendered in non-edible materials. There’s a disconnect: the performance was joy-filled and provocative precisely because cake is loaded with meaning; yet the professionals who provide cake struggle to sustain their businesses economically. How odd is it that interpretations of cake art are perceived, priced, and sold as “fine art,” while the cake makers who inspire such replicas fight every day to have our work valued at a fraction of the price? So we’re stepping into action and advocacy. We’re creating tools to help cake artists name our intent and artistic meaning, so we can advocate for ourselves as artists to clients, communities, audiences, and, critically, to ourselves. We’re starting with Jasmine Rae’s Theory of Practice, a framework for clarifying why each of us does what we do as artists. You already have techniques, materials, even a style you like, but why? What do your choices communicate about who you are, and what beliefs and values drive your creative voice? Jasmine introduced the concept in Cake Study this week (recording available to Cake Circle members), and soon we’ll host a public event sharing this tool with any cake artists who want to use it.
