Last call for Omari Jesse’s delightful exhibition, Keepsake, at Chela Mitchell Gallery in Washington, DC.
⠀
You can feel the inspirations of family, memory, safety, and joy in this first solo exhibition. Curated by Jarvis DuBois, Omari’s signature collage, photography, and screen printing techniques draw viewers into a living photo album that celebrates coming of age and the DC community.
⠀
Yet Keepsake also transcends place, as several moments in each work had many of us seeing Polaroids of our own experience and feeling that nostalgic warmth of childhood.
⠀
So whether you’re from DC or not, there’s a tender reminiscence in today’s Giametry Homework—go soak up the love of and homage to native Washingtonian magic.
⠀
Plus, it’s Chela, Omari, and Jarvis. My friends are so dope!
⠀

When the Mayor of DC's photographer takes your picture, but you still feel the need to tell him how to do his job. His response: "Shut up." 🤣🤣🤣

This is what happens when you hand the mic to the people. ✨ Led by our amazing host Nina Ligon, The People’s Mic brought together singers, poets, musicians, and improv performers, including Music in Common, CFA Repertory Theatre’s “Say It Loud,” and the D.C. and Prince George’s County Poet Laureates, for a celebration of every voice in this unfinished story. We’re still feeling it!

They passed me the mic with little warning, and my inner voice had a whole agenda: freestyle, give folks their flowers, plug the socials… and try not to get distracted by the beat 🎤😂

But seriously, there was so much to celebrate at yesterday’s FUNSET FESTIVAL. Seeing Franklin Park full of music, dancing, and people enjoying themselves together is exactly why we do this work 🤎

Special thanks to DJ Miss Her @iammissher for allowing me to groove with her a bit and for providing such a sick beat 🙏🏽 😂

And my heart is full of gratitude for everyone involved— thanks to @baldheadqueen, @karizma_kaytronik_official, @criticalconditionband, @jahsonicdc, @hotterthisyear, and the Funset All-Stars @underdogthedj & @summerloving71 for giving us so many reasons to keep dancing 🙏🏽

And many thanks to all the vendors and creatives who brought so much to the day:
@artbaeonline • @poupcards • @artby_kd • diaspora honey • @grand_aveswdc • @trippyworlddmv • @chris_cardi • @districtflamesllc • @dj_rbi and the Crate Convention • Antonio Moore Art • @phreshingredient • @eatwwsco • Bevy Shoppe by @peaceloveandcocktails 🛍️🎨

To our @downtowndcbid who once again killed it behind the scenes: THANK YOU! 🙏🏽

I’ll get back to my day job now. Unless somebody hands me another mic 😂🎤

Proud that our DowntownDC BID team is helping bring this celebration to the park. Bring your friends, bring your family, and save me some room on the dance floor 😂🕺🏽
