She gonna be a wet one, that’s for darn sure!

It had been pretty hot and dry everywhere on the island up until the rally. As we drove south to Coombs we were hit with torrential rain. It held off for the weekend, but threatened to return in the north come the end of the week. We rolled into camp on the north coast with relatively dry weather compared to the weekend, a few roving showers, that was fine, we can deal with a few showers. Then @toddsinstalife messaged me, “hey, just to let you know, the forecast is showing a yellow warning for rainfall.” Cool, cool, cool…well, tide is up, waves licking at our tires, we don’t have anywhere to go, I guess we stay.

100 freaking millimetres of rain (that’s nearly 4”) fell over night…😳 Whaaaaat? We’d been sheltered from most of the wind luckily and our gracious neighbours had lent us their canopy, so the tent didn’t soak through, but some other campers weren’t as lucky. Another camper we met lost his whole canopy/ bug shelter, just gone with the wind, adios.

The day we left the beach, as we approached the river crossing near the entrance we found a path of water completely changed from when we’d entered, a whole gravel berm just washed away into the ocean. North coast weather is crazy. We’re glad we stuck it out though, what was next was the cherry on top and now we can look at future island winter weather and say, “humph, is it 100mm of rain? No? Ah, we’ll be alright.”

We were glad to have our friends along with us for this little foray into the bush. Had it not been for @andrew2_cruisecontrol who swept in and saved the day with his enclosed 270° and propane fire place, it would have been a very different experience for us two suckers stuck in a ground tent.

Exceptional experience overall, 10/10, would do it again (granted we have a better tent and heating).

Shakedown trip #2: commenced

August was insanity. Immediately after returning from our very first shakedown trip in Jerry, the timer reset and we went back to work on the truck. New paint and full deck build completed was the goal before attending @vancouverislandoverlandrally. It all seemed fairly straight forward, it wasn’t, of course. Fast forward a month and we’d made it to the rally, by the skin of our teeth, I had literally finished wiring our tail lights the hour we left. We met with a lot of you who follow our travels, had a lot of great conversations and put faces to names. It was great.

After that month of work, it was time we hit the dirt again and explore Vancouver Island some more. It’s scary how fast a summer disappears when you have your nose to the grindstone, so we wanted to catch the last bits of sun before winter hit.

A post rally north island trip was planned. We had our friend @andrew2_cruisecontrol join us at the rally and then I roped in @_occasionallytravelling_ into the party as well. We all set off together as the rally came to a close and reconvened at a rec site a little north of CR. A night of camping by a calm lake was a perfect recipe to recuperate us after a busy weekend. Heading north from there we collected @bama.van and the our posse was complete for the week, it was time to go on an adventure.

If you’ve read this far, sweet. Just a mention about the second photo. Keep an eye out for a video with these three trucks, it’s coming, we’re planning a trip, it’s going to be radical. @west_coast_4x4 @westerly.kirkly

Different rigs, different roads, but it all led us here.

We first met Lily, Oli and their Land Rover ‘Moose’ 3 months ago at an overland expo where it basically poured with rain all weekend. We stayed in touch and planned to meet for another camp together - hopefully in better weather.

We’ve ended up crossing paths with @_occasionallytravelling_ in Alberta, Northwest Territories, Alaska and now British Columbia.

Exploring remote beaches on north Vancouver Island was a dream come true, doing it with friends made it even better.

Pretty cool how some friendships start with a follow on Insta, then turn into meeting on the road and sharing the adventures 🌊🌲
