Banff's community space for books and beyond.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
During my Banff trip, I set one intention: bring a small art kit. With two kids and one hotel room, that’s easier said than done. So I woke up an hour before everyone else for some quiet time outside with paper and graphite.

I expected “forest baths,” mountains, and lakes to inspire me.

I didn’t expect the Whyte Museum to be one of my favorite stops. In the U.S., I’m used to walking into a historic site and having to ask: whose voice is missing here? Mount Vernon. Yosemite. The list goes on.

But at the Whyte, the perspectives of the Indigenous, Chinese laborers, interned Ukrainians, and women are part of the story being told, with intention.

There was also a gallery within the museum where I saw my first in-person Guerrilla Girls display.

Reminded me that art is always political. We choose what’s in the frame. The railroad companies knew that too. They hired artists to paint the West as land ready to be settled.

Another great time to sneak in a 5-minute sketch? When your youngest loses his sunglasses (again). Even in 5 minutes, it’s hard to miss civilization: roads, houses, structures.

The Gen Alphas made me do it.

If I couldn’t love Banff more, I stopped by the Banff Public Library, where I found all three of my books in their catalog. Librarians do their own kind of truth-telling every day. They decide what’s kept, what’s findable, what’s still on the shelf for someone to discover. Thank you Alberta Librarians!

I planned this trip with a small arsenal of art supplies, hoping to squeeze in art wherever I could.

Sometimes an hour with graphite. Sometimes 30 seconds with a graphite rock at Banff Park museum. Woohoo.
