Went to Windsor for a dance party with beauties, stopped in London on the way home to spend a few hours with best and put down the phone after custodial handover to just vibe. Hangs at home fav places with friends from multiple lifetimes. Lived in the moment a lot a lot

I don’t mess around with my love of olives, and telling me you have the best it the city is a BOLD choice. But, and I wish an eye-roll could be a scale of how much I enjoy things, it wasn’t a lie.

WELL I think it’s safe to say that I ate more things in August than any other month?! And what a variety too, from wild things at @letsgototheex to my fave brunch at @bodegahenriette.

I still have lots of reels to catch up on, and lots of content to make for @foodismca too, what a yummy problem to have 😋

A month for staying in town and still seeing friends from old homes (xo @bdiversitygroup @__mel__issa18 @supplydemandbrewery ). A month of fav places and faces. And the Viagra Boys. From train to couch to @torontococktailconference with @devilsyams (thanks for catching us cracking the fuck up @ashleysenja). Ended on a v smashy birthday note for @the_audhdacity

We’re back to the future… again.

Only this time, it’s nostalgia behind the bar, with retro cocktails and bar snacks getting a playful 21st-century makeover!

Blair Phillips visits bars across Toronto and Vancouver that are reimagining the past with modern techniques while having fun with it, rather than simply reliving it in this fun trend taking over Canada.

At Vancouver’s Breeze Bar, co-owner Ryan Tanner’s favourite is a hot dog with Cheez Whiz, ketchup and crushed chips called a “Kid.” In Vancouver’s historic Gastown neighbourhood, Breeze Bar channels Tanner’s trashy-and-classy approach and the playful spirit that started at his apartment parties a decade ago: Astroturf and free hot dogs on one side, sous-vide ribeye, grilled and served with caviar on the other.

Meanwhile, in Toronto’s east end, Bar Mini discovered a time machine in a snack menu inspired by a 1970s cocktail-dinner menu. For owners Maty Gignac and Dave Still, the flavours had to feel authentic, something they would actually serve guests in their own home. Their pickled eggs, topped with a swirl of devilled egg filling, land somewhere between a classic hosting snack and an unapologetic bar favourite.

Find more retro pairings in Blair’s full feature on our website, or pick up a print copy if you’re ready to fully immerse yourself in the vintage feel.

But first, an honest question: are you reliving happy memories or discovering something new?
