And that’s a wrap from Gisborne! 💫

Four days, what an experience.
We finished our final day by opening the doors to the community and giving everyone the opportunity to put what they’d learnt into practice on real people.

I got on the tools alongside the crew, and seeing everyone giving it their best, helping one another and enjoying themselves was such a great satisfying feeling.

But I think what I’ll remember most is the people.
The conversations, the laughs, the kindness and the connection we all built over those four days. Saying goodbye was a lot harder than I expected. A few tears were shed, including my own!

A massive thank you to Di, @turangahealth , @eit_tairawhiti and everyone who helped bring this together.

To the crew, thank you for welcoming me, trusting me and giving it your all. You made these four days pretty special.

Much love to you all.

Day 3 here in Gisborne!

Another great day with the crew at Tūranga Health.
Yesterday was all about getting comfortable with the clippers. Everyone had a chance to choose their own haircut, work through different guards, practise their techniques and even get into a bit of beard shaping.

We also had a few models come in, and one of the boys did an awesome job on his haircut.

It’s been pretty cool watching everyone progress over the past three days, especially knowing some had never done anything like this before.

Today is our last day together here in Gisborne and I’m looking forward to finishing the week with everyone!

Day 2 in Gisborne, and things are coming along nicely! 👊

We spent a lot more time on the practical side of things. How to hold and work with scissors, getting our sections right, understanding haircut shapes and introducing the clippers.

It’s good seeing everyone starting to get more comfortable with the tools and putting things into practice.

Today we’re getting stuck into full haircuts. Looking forward to seeing how everyone goes!

Just one of the many little ways we try to make a difference for our whānau. ❤️

We’re always thinking of new ideas and ways to help our people provide for their loved ones, while creating opportunities that benefit our wider community.

At the heart of it all is our whānau, our people and looking after one another. 💚

It’s about doing what we can, with what we have, to make a difference. 🥰

From being on the road to Gisborne on Sunday to getting straight into the classroom on Monday! 👊

What a start to the week!

There’s something I love about travelling around NZ doing these workshops. You meet people from all walks of life, share what you know, have a few laughs along the way and hopefully help someone discover something they really enjoy doing.

Yesterday was a great reminder of why I still love teaching after all these years. Here’s a little look at how our first day went with Tūranga Health in Gisborne.

Three more days to go! 👊

Day 1 in Gisborne, done!
What a good start to the week.

Today was about getting to know everyone, working through the basics and getting stuck into the mannequins. We spent time on sectioning, understanding the tools and getting comfortable working with the hair.

Really enjoyed seeing everyone giving it a go and getting involved throughout the day.
Three more days together and plenty more to get into.

Big thanks to Dianne and the team at @turangahealth for having Barber Evolution here.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

The longer I’ve been barbering, the more I’ve realised how important the everyday stuff is.

Understanding shape, knowing how to work with different hair textures, getting comfortable with your scissors and clippers, and knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing.

These are things we work with every single day, but there’s always room to improve. That’s something I’ve always enjoyed about teaching through Barber Evolution.

It really doesn’t matter if you’ve been cutting for a year or ten years, there’s always something you can take away and use behind the chair.

Next week we’ll be getting into plenty of this in Gisborne, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of it with those attending.

If you’re keen to bring Barber Evolution to your shop or city, flick me a message. Always happy to have a chat.

Gisborne next week! 👊

Pretty excited to be heading to Gisborne to spend four days with @turangahealth delivering a barbering fundamentals programme.

We’ll be covering a bit of everything, from understanding our tools and head shape to fading, blending and scissor work, with plenty of time for everyone to get involved and give things a go.

I’ve been travelling around NZ teaching for years now, and getting opportunities like this is something I never take for granted. Massive thanks to Di and the team at Tūranga Health for having me.

Looking forward to meeting everyone next week!

And if you’re a shop owner, school or organisation interested in bringing Barber Evolution your way, you’re always welcome to reach out.

Been doing Barber Evolution workshops around NZ for a long time now and I still love it.

There’s so much education out there these days, which is awesome, but for me it’s always been about keeping things useful and sharing what I’ve learnt from years behind the chair.

Fades, shape, scissors, beards, tools… all the stuff we deal with every day. Doesn’t matter if you’re new to the game or you’ve been cutting for years, we can all learn something from each other.

If you want to come along to a workshop, or you own a shop and want me to come spend some time with your team, hit me up. Let’s make it happen 👊

AUGUST 🍁
A bit of everything.

Plenty of back and forth between Auckland and Tauranga. Family, friends, work, training. Some really good moments and some tough ones too. Plenty to be grateful for.

The longer I’ve been in this industry, the more I’ve realised just how important the basic stuff actually is.

Sectioning properly, understanding head shape, controlling your comb, body position, knowing where the weight is sitting and having a proper consultation before you even start cutting.

A lot of us barbers and stylists are always looking for the next technique, the next tool, and for some, the quickest way to get something done. But sometimes the biggest improvement in your work comes from going back and properly understanding the stuff you thought you already knew.

I’ve seen it in my own work over the years, and I see it all the time when I’m teaching. Get the foundations right and everything else starts making a lot more sense.

Something I’m going to start talking about a bit more again. 🤙🏽
