🎬 PILOT EPISODE LAUNCHING SUNDAY, AUGUST 30 🎬

Hollywood is suddenly fascinated with Latter-day Saint culture. Heretic, American Primeval, Under the Banner of Heaven, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, etc...

They're telling our stories.

We aren't.

So what would it take for Latter-day Saint filmmakers to tell stories that are faithful to who we are, but compelling enough for the rest of the world to actually want to watch?

That's the question behind The New Latter-day Saint Cinema Podcast, launching Sunday, August 30th. Each week, KJ Hirschi (founder of 1830 Studios) sits down with filmmakers, artists, scholars, and creators to dig into the history of Latter-day Saint cinema, examine what's working right now and what isn't, and figure out how we build a real creative movement, one capable of reaching mainstream audiences, not just our own.

Illness, surgery, hospitalizations, and even a death tried to prevent @roozden_scoot, @barrettburgin, @mormcore, @zachcolliernoise and I from presenting at the Mormon History Association conference last month, but we made it happen.

Our presentation was titled “If You Know, You Know: Sacred Subtext in Contemporary Mormon Art”. We each presented on how modern LDS artists, filmmakers, musicians, and even video game designers are creating work that deliberately includes multiple levels of understanding that are only revealed based on the knowledge of the consumer. Somehow we failed to all get a group photo.

It was a wonderful weekend spent learning and making connections in the community. We were excited to find out that the conference next year will be in Provo! Boy oh boy do we have a gallery for you to come and see.

A little reminder—and maybe a little encouragement.

Every one of these photos represents a moment that looked exciting from the outside. Some of them really were. But behind almost every highlight of my film career was something I wasn’t posting about.

Fear. Self-doubt. Anxiety. Career setbacks. Financial risk. Intrusive thoughts. Questions about whether I should keep going.

I think social media has a way of convincing us everyone else is living the life we wish we had. The truth is, we’re usually comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel.

That’s why I wanted to share a few of mine. Not for sympathy, but because I hope it reminds someone that you can be struggling and still moving forward. You can question yourself and still keep showing up. Sometimes the photo everyone envies was taken on a day you almost didn’t get out of bed.

Be kind to people. Keep showing up for your own dreams. And remember… social media isn’t real life.

Incredibly honored to have JAVA JIVE win the @mormonletters short film award for works done in 2025. This is The Association for Mormon Letter’s 50th year as an organization. It was founded with the specific purpose of fostering the production and study of quality creative work within our community, across many fields including literature, poetry, plays, and film.

It tends to be both risky and gratifying when fellow members of a minority community engage with your work, especially when the central focus of the piece is a comment on cultural shame. Really grateful for their flattering (and fittingly coy) citation.

Also humbled to have our work included in two other AML nominations for the @centerforldsarts—Mason Kamana Allred’s essay “The Body is the Message: The Promise of Mormon Horror”, which examines THE ANGEL, and The Center’s Advent Calendar, which featured a short story by @barrettburgin.

In response to the exceptional strength of this year’s applicant pool for the 2026 Artists Residency, the Center is delighted to announce a new round of Artist Development Grants. Underwritten and selected by the Center’s Board of Directors, these grants were awarded to one applicant in each artistic discipline and are intended to support promising projects that emerged from the adjudication process.

Had a fun time at the Mormon History Association Conference.

I was pleasantly surprised at the sheer amount of diversity at the event.

From running into Ward Radio host Cardon Ellis, to speaking with members of The Church of Jesus Christ (AKA Bickertonites), and members of the Community of Christ, it was a wonderful melting pot of beliefs and backgrounds.

One of my favorite moments was attending the “IYKYK: Sacred Subtext in Contemporary Latter-Day Saint Art Roundtable”, where talented artists, directors, and game developers shared their peculiar works.

For those interested in Mormon horror, I highly recommend watching The Angel, a short film by Burgindie Pictures.

Grateful to the many historians and researchers who made this event possible.
