One of my favorite things about Tucson is finding people who care deeply about what they do—and a community that shows up for them.

Barrio Bread is a lovely example. Behind those familiar saguaro loaves is a story of local farms, heritage grains, and a baker whose work earned national recognition while keeping its Tucson roots.

A little neighborhood bakery. A lot to love.

Before the storefront and the line outside, there was a Tucson garage.

Don Guerra started Barrio Bread in 2009, selling his naturally fermented loaves through farmers markets, school pickups, and word of mouth. Neighbors became customers, and those customers helped a small home bakery grow into something much bigger.

In 2016, he opened in Broadway Village—a new home for a business Tucson had already made its own.

Before many Tucsonans knew him as their favorite breadmaker, students knew Don Guerra as their teacher.

A University of Arizona education graduate, Don taught elementary school here in Tucson before returning to baking. He still loves to teach, sharing the knowledge behind his bread through classes and workshops.

In 2022, he won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker. Such a wonderful recognition for someone who has given so much to our local food community.

And, as a fellow Wildcat, I love that University of Arizona connection.

There’s a reason this bread tastes like it belongs here.

Don has worked with local growers, including BKW Farms in Marana, to help revive heritage wheats and build a stronger regional grain economy. Freshly milled flour and slow fermentation bring those grains to life in the bakery.

The lines outside tell another part of the story: Tucson has embraced it. Bread is available until sold out, so an early visit gives you the best chance to bring home the loaf you had your heart set on.

🌾 THIS MESSAGE IS IMPORTANT 🌾

My mission with Staff of Life Wheat and The Whole Wheat Guild is to re-establish the wheat
ecosystem in San Diego County.

To once again connect the farmer, miller, and baker in one of the most remarkable agricultural
growing regions in the world.

To build resiliency through connection, education, and community.

To establish a local grain reserve and strengthen a community that is currently dependent on
outside supply chains for all of its wheat and flour.

Think about that. Wheat provides approximately 20% of the calories consumed by humanity
worldwide, yet we have become disconnected from the people, land, and infrastructure
responsible for producing one of our most essential foods.

We have an opportunity to change that.

Join us on November 7th at the Avo-Toast Social, hosted at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine
Museum, to learn how we can work together to rebuild San Diego’s local wheat ecosystem.

See you there
