Hey friends! I’ll be on 91X tonight from 7-10pm with my friends/mentors Bart (Blackstone) Cheever and Tim Mays. We’ll be talking to Tim Pyles on his show Loudspeaker about a very special event coming up this Wednesday at The Casbah. The reunion/return of two legendary club/parties that I was so lucky to be a small part of in the beginning of my dj career. One Nation Under a Groove and Jivewire.
There aren’t enough words to explain how important these two guys are to my dj career. One Nation was a legendary club/party that started in warehouses in downtown SD (pre Gaslamp) in the 80s. It wasn’t until the mid 90s that I met Bart at a warehouse party we both were booked at above the Stoopid Clothing store on 8th and G. I was just beginning to dj at a club called Romperoom by Todd of Playschool. I was playing vinyl from midnight to 6am and had no idea how to mix properly. Bart and I connected immediately and over time of watching him and opening for him I learned how to mix, blend, and program records from one of the best. Eventually he asked me to be a part of the One Nation family and for the next 15 years that was my life. Every weekend mixing up punk, disco, hip hop and electro into a mashed up frenzy. Bart and I travelled and played in Mexico, LA and even a weird one in Reno (ask me about it in person). We even put out a couple records!
I wouldn’t be playing today if it wasn’t for meeting Bart and I’m eternally grateful.
Jivewire was another legendary Casbah party that I got lucky enough to be a part of. I used to go and listen to Tim, Bart and Kenny play disco and funk until the 2am if I was I was lucky enough to get inside the building. There’d be a line down the block at the Casbah every time they’d do one. My memory is a little blurry but I’m pretty sure on the night of one party Kenny was sick and couldn’t do it and Tim called me and asked if I was available to fill in. I jumped at the chance to play with those guys.
Kenny eventually moved away and I played almost every Jivewire from that date forward. Anyway, listen in tonight and hear more stories and please come Wednesday night. It’s free!!
