Making 40 little concertina sketchbooks for my upcoming visual journalling workshops at the National Library of Australia.

A lot of cutting, gluing, folding and colourful mess — but look how lovely they are!

With thanks to Shihui for teaching me the bookmaking techniques I’ve used here. ❤️

just a gurl taking herself on a lil solo date to make a cool gal leather-binded notebook from scratch 🧵📒 used my sg culture pass to do this from @klooksg @basedbookarts !!

I love how highly customisable this is as well! From the leather colours, to the thread and even the strap and even cutting into the leather cover design 🍃 4 hours of pure therapy.

Co. Duxton welcomed @basedbookarts for an intimate bookbinding workshop where participants explored the history and technique behind the French link stitch. Over two hours, they crafted their own non-adhesive, exposed-spine journals leaving with a functional handmade piece and a new appreciation for the patience and beauty of traditional craft.

Missed this session? Based Book Arts will be back at Co. Duxton on 21 September, 8 October & 21 October. Sign up via the link in our bio and join us for the next session!

August • A month of feasting over birthday celebrations, national day & home cooked meals👩🏻‍🍳

Celebrating the love of A&E🕊️

🌵🌵🌵

A birthday activity for the mister • French and coptic binding with @basedbookarts! What shall we use these notebooks for? Can’t bear to use them🥹

Getting started

Selecting our book covers

Birthday dinner at @mustardseed_sg for the mister • We love how grounding the interior feels, it’s almost like entering a friend’s home for a home cooked meal.

Birthday dinner at @mustardseed_sg for the mister • We love how grounding the interior feels, it’s almost like entering a friend’s home for a home cooked meal.

This was such a well-balanced meal, and we were treated to cooking techniques and spices with influences from different singaporean cuisines, but with a contemporary twist!

Fridge clean out meal

Love their daifukus & matcha so much! It screams summerrrrr☀️

National Day cookout (but not singaporean food cause it’s too difficult🤣)

And still trying to master that latte art🫠

Birthday meal part 2 at @smalls_sg • We were so stuffed by the time it came to the mains, they were so generous with the portions! Some dishes caught us by surprise - like the bacon pancake, corn ice-cream with hashbrown?!

Treat myself to something while gift shopping

@un____studio studio warming sale and I finally got my hands on @kenethtan’s wares🥹

A very meaningful exhibition by @pannlim • A creative’s take on AI: can AI truly take over or nothing comes close to the power of the human brain and human heart?

Ordered @pantler’s famous choux for our National Day party before their closure, and so glad they’re continuing on!💪🏻

Happy September! ✨ A new month means a new line-up of workshops and gatherings at Co. Duxton, and this month, our theme is Looping, a reminder that some things come back around, giving us the chance to revisit, reconnect, and see familiar things in a new way. We’re happy to welcome @basedbookarts back with their French Link Stitch Bookbinding Workshop and Coptic Bookbinding Workshop, alongside @mahjonglah Learn to Play Singapore Mahjong (Beginners), The Colours of Your Roots @veu_alchemist and @fillyourwellspring , @quietreadersclub Game Night. Whether you’re here to pick up a new skill, meet new people, slow down, or simply try something different, there’s something for everyone this month. Come join us, reconnect with the community, and see what’s waiting in the loop this September. 🤍

Artist date: I hand-stitched my first notebook at a workshop by @basedbookarts and loved it! It was the French Stitch and Coptic Book Binding workshop. The reference is the grey book on the left - I didn’t do too badly!

It took a little while to get the hang of it but with Shihui’s clear instructions and patient guidance, I made it in the end. You can pick your own cover and (fountain pen friendly) paper, and a colourful waxed linen thread to sew it with. Overall, bookbinding wasn’t as difficult as I thought. Now I hope to make some watercolour notebooks.

We started by learning how to trim the paper to make one section, then learned to stitch it all together. It’s so satisfying to make your own notebook! Now I need a workshop to learn how to make the paper…

Time has a way of revealing what matters. It encourages us to look back with gratitude, linger in the present, and step forward with intention. As Singapore celebrates another National Day, our theme for August is Time—a gentle reminder that every season, every conversation, and every small decision becomes part of the story we’re writing.

This month at Co. Duxton, we’ve gathered experiences that honour time in different ways. Discover the scent of your personality through @eurilily__ MBTI Perfumemaking Workshop, find stillness with @risetyoga Yin Yoga Meditation, explore identity and purpose in Men’s Square Vol. 3 by @getthrively & @slowlove.club , preserve nature’s beauty in @bloomingembrace_ Flower Frame Workshop, slow your hands and mind with @basedbookarts returning Coptic Bookbinding Workshop, sink into deep rest during @innerombak Stillness Sound Bath, or imagine the future you want to create through @soft.ambitionclub Life in Focus: Guided Visualisation & Digital Vision Boarding for Women. Each gathering offers a different way to pause, reflect, create, and move forward with greater clarity.

Perhaps that’s what this month is really about—not racing against time, but learning to be present within it. To make room for meaningful conversations, quiet creativity, and moments that stay with us long after they pass.

Workshop registrations are now live via the link on our bio ⛓️‍💥

see you!

was such a fun experience bookbinding! 🪡📒

venue was so quaint, and I loved the whole process from getting to choose our signatures & covers, to making a section, and the embroidery itself

Co. Duxton had a session with @basedbookarts for a Coptic binding session, and looking back on it now, it felt like more than just a workshop - it was a much-needed midweek reset.

The evening offered a calm, unhurried space to step away from the usual routine, where participants could ease into the process of bookbinding while listening to soft background music and enjoying a drink of their choice. It created a simple but effective way to unwind after a long day.

From a participant’s perspective, the experience was both creative and reflective. Being introduced to Coptic binding, an ancient technique with roots tracing back to early Egyptian craftsmanship, added a layer of depth to the session.

The distinctive exposed spine and chain-like stitching were not only visually striking but also revealed how thoughtful and functional traditional methods can be. It shifted the way one might view books, from everyday objects to carefully constructed pieces of art.

The hands-on process of assembling a journal from scratch was especially meaningful. Carefully stitching each section together required patience and focus, which naturally encouraged a slower, more mindful pace. Choosing different cover designs and thread colours made the final piece feel personal, turning it into something more than just a notebook—it became a reflection of individual creativity.

What participants ultimately took away was not just a handcrafted journal, but a sense of calm and accomplishment. The workshop highlighted the value of making something tangible in a relaxed setting, and how creative practices like this can serve as a form of self-care. Long after the session ended, the experience lingered as a reminder to carve out time for creativity, mindfulness, and small, meaningful moments of pause.

Do look out for our May events 🤍
