On Tuesday, August 18, I had the pleasure of attending the Jamaican Independence Day Celebration at Queens Borough Hall with my son, hosted by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr.

As someone born and raised in Jamaica, this celebration was especially meaningful to me. It was wonderful to experience an evening filled with nostalgic Reggae music, dance performances, cultural recognition, and community—and to share that experience with my son.

From the rhythmic performances by MS 72 students to the recognition of this year’s inspirational and remarkable honorees, the evening honored the richness of Jamaican heritage and the contributions of those who continue to strengthen our communities.

A special thank you to everyone who helped make this celebration so memorable. It was a beautiful evening of diversity, connection, and Jamaican pride, united in a shared sense of belonging—an evening that epitomized Jamaica’s national motto and celebrated its multicultural roots: “Out of Many, One People.”
