Introducing Paul Brooks aka @basswolf

Paul Brooks has spent over twenty years in this industry, as Canadian publicist for Ninja Tune, as PR lead for Sled Island and Bass Coast, as a CJSW programmer, and as a Calgarian who has watched this city’s scenes build and rebuild.

At SYNC, Paul will be speaking about Audience Development for Independent Artists. This session is a working look at how independent artists build an audience in 2026.

Expect real campaigns and real numbers, including the ones that did not work. Expect a frank conversation about what is actually achievable from Alberta, where the opportunities here are underrated, and where artists waste money. You will leave with a framework you can apply to your next single, EP or album.

This is the kind of knowledge we want to make space for at SYNC: specific, lived and connected to the work itself.

Of Simmering, and the Surge.

That was the first thing they told me. And something in that phrase said it all.

It’s not about the moment of impact. It’s about what happens before. That energy that builds beneath the surface, slow, without warning, until it can’t be contained anymore.

And that’s where all the chrome figures come from. A material that is cold and reflective on the outside, strong and solid, born from a liquid state. Metal at boiling point.

Designing the identity for an urban art festival is strange in the best way. You’re not designing for a product. You’re designing for a moment in the city that will last for years, maybe decades. And that moment belongs to anyone who walks down the street.

For years, I've dreamed up these songs, and this concept and to have it exist in the world feels surreal.

This EP is about acceptance and waking up your mind. Each song is a different lesson; to be kind to yourself, to stop accepting less than you deserve, to be kind to the earth, and to understand the forces that contribute to destroying it. To be still, to be strange, to take it all in. To love, to lose and still love. To be you, and be proud of that.

I hope that these songs can warm someone's day or open someone's heart to new possibilities. ˚˖𓍢ִ໋❀

Taking place August 13–15 at Contemporary Calgary, this free, three day gathering brings together artists, thinkers, musicians, writers, curators, and cultural leaders from across Canada and around the world to explore this year’s theme: Of Simmering, and the Surge.

As a festival we are interested in meditating on how Ideas rarely transform the world overnight. They begin in underground scenes, artist studios, neighbourhoods, newsrooms, online communities, and conversations before building enough momentum to reshape public life. This year’s conference asks: How do ideas form? Who carries them forward? And what happens when they finally burst into the mainstream?

The nineteenth edition of Sled Island Music & Arts Festival arrived with sold-out shows, packed venues, and some of the most engaged crowds the festival has seen in recent memory.

What follows is a festival diary written from a perspective of Take Aim Media’s Paul Brooks and Jess Arcand: two publicists, both Calgarians and longtime Sled superfans, who spent five days toggling between laminates and just being people who love music.
