Book 91 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Aftermath by Jackie Davis

With her husband Samuel serving as an artist in The Great War, Ivy Chapman secures a position managing the Auckland Free Library. What begins as a necessity soon blossoms into something much more: a quiet awakening to her own capability, independence and allure. Ivy’s sister Katherine, too, has experienced a taste of a different life in the absence of her husband George.

But as the ships bearing their husbands draw ever closer, the sisters must prepare themselves for a return to their lives before. Ivy is shocked to find the Samuel who steps off the Halifax bears little resemblance to the light-hearted and romantic young man she married but two years earlier. And for Katherine, is a ‘return’ even possible?

With an epidemic at their doorstep and a future that feels increasingly unsettled, the aftermath of war brings with it bitterness, loss and a chasm much vaster than the oceans that once lay between them.

This book was so, so interesting. I’ve read a lot of books set during the World Wars, but very few set just afterwards, and fewer again set in New Zealand.

This book is told from the perspectives of the four main characters: Ivy, Samuel, Katherine and George. We meet Ivy as she goes about the job she has come to love as the head librarian at the Auckland Free Library. Her husband, Samuel, pens his first entries from the sickly boughs of the Halifax on his way back to New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Ivy’s sister Katherine has found herself in a predicament, and her somewhat reckless husband, George, is arriving home from the war any day too.

There’s no denying that the men who fought in The Great War returned with PTSD and other mental health issues, but it was fascinating to experience their return from the perspectives of the women, who suddenly lost their independence.

It was interesting to learn more about the Spanish Flu and the epidemic that resulted from this. Did you know over 9000 New Zealanders died of this in late 1918?! Mind blowing!

Thank you @batemanbooks for sending me this beautiful book.

Bollix at the Irish Embassy. Very diplomatic of them to have me.

A huge thank you to H.E. Jane Connolly and the team at the Embassy of Ireland in Wellington for such a warm welcome, and to the Irish Business Network New Zealand (IBNNZ) Wellington and Justine Fitzmaurice for their support.

Gráinne Moss was on fine form as MC and chief interviewer, with her mum, Philippa Gunn, keeping the book sales in very good hands.

And to everyone who came along, said hello and shared their stories — thank you. Having all that support in one room meant a great deal.

Book 87 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Maybe Baby by Emma Neale

Nate, a grieving widower, is determined to honour his late wife and find a way to have the child they were desperate to raise together. After various attempts to identify a suitable surrogate come to nothing, Nate is compelled to try something radical.

He travels to London to take part in a groundbreaking medical trial. As things progress, he becomes caught in the complex hinge of three powerful desires: his loyalty to his late wife, a primal urge to be a father, and his knee-weakening attraction to Sadie, who has her own reasons to resist starting a family.

A moving, funny and thought provoking novel that challenges traditional notions of gender and family with love, loyalty and legacy at its heart.

Thank you to the wonderful team at @batemanbooks for sending me this book a few months back. It was so good to finally prioritise it over the recent school holidays.

I’m not going to lie, this book was not what I was expecting. It actually completely threw me. I obviously didn’t read the synopsis too closely, as the words ‘radical’ and ‘groundbreaking medical trial’ should have prepared me, maybe baby?

Without spoiling the read for others, Nate’s radical approach to parenthood had me questioning my own views of what could potentially be the future of pregnancy and family life. It’s really not as far fetched as I initially thought.

I really felt for Nate. He desperately wants to be a dad, yet he’s also grieving his wife. He feels a real desire and determination to honour Kelly’s wishes. His family, like me, struggled to get their heads around Nate’s decision. While totally understandable, Nate really needed someone in his corner.

Although this book challenged my thinking, it was a great read. It’s funny, thought-provoking, hopeful and complex. Best of all, it’s set in Dunedin, and then London. Two of my favourite places. It would make a great book club read. So much to discuss!

THE END OF EVERYTHING - I have to be honest, this one is polarising. It’s deliberately opaque, it withholds answers, it’s all atmosphere and meaning rather than plot…This is the weirdest, most dreamlike book on the Booker shortlist..A man collects strange objects at the tideline in a world that has quietly ended. No explanation. No spectacle. Just dread. The End of Everything
