I’m happy to share my piece included in Plants, Animals and Sky @canada.nyc. I’m amazed by the work of the infinitely talented @msgrauer and #wallacewhitney in compiling this extraordinary show. It’s a blessing to be in the same space as many of my all-time favorite painters, including Lois Dodd, Joan Snyder, Katherine Bradford, Marsden Hartley, and George Inness, to name a few, plus so many of my extraordinary contemporary peers.

I paint outdoors to be closer to nature, to listen to it, not to capture it. It is important to me to surrender to my surroundings and let go of art world strategies. That’s partly how the plastic frames came about: doing something wrong that feels right. I embrace this discord and let it move me forward. The plastics I find in excess in the landscape have a weathered patina. It’s almost as if nature is trying to subsume the mess we have made. I’m grateful to be part of this web of artists illuminating their relationships to these subjects in this show.

Thank you to so many for supporting me, posting stories, and caring. Your consistent love and attention mean the world!!

After years of Night Cars moving through darkness, @bbest_ffriend has arrived somewhere stranger, softer, and no less uncertain.

This past weekend, right at the beginning of summer in its full scorching glory, @bbest_ffriend unveiled a special, site-specific project w @villanavarra.lemuy / @galerieenriconavarrain in the south of France. Ring the Cookhouse Bell introduces a new concept through paintings, drawings, sculpture, and even underwater installation. The entire setting proved to be a perfect playground for the nifty, self-taught artist to explore, and I was honored to write an exhibition text for it, so here are a few excerpts from it:

Throughout his artistic career and his life in general, #EliotGreenwald has been primarily a maker, a hands-on person who loves experimenting with materials, techniques, and concepts. About six years ago, at the dawn of the global pandemic, the self-taught artist began drawing an image of a boxy car with headlights tearing through the darkness ahead. Soon, these drawings turned into paintings that felt awfully timely in an increasingly distant and unsafe world, becoming his iconic Night Car series.

Over the following years, night cars continued to travel around the globe, taking on different shapes and exploring a variety of landscapes. In the meantime, Greenwald moved with his family to Ashfield, Massachusetts, and this shift eventually reflected on his practice. Settled in the countryside, away from life in the city and far from the coast, an image of a house by the water began to appear in his sketches and drawings. The smoke rising from its chimney gave it a sense of life and contemporaneity, and the multiplication created a spirit of community. After “driving all night” for years, continuously discovering what’s in front of him and leaving what’s behind, a sweeping vista opened up as far as the eye can see, and Greenwald has arrived.
