Through Rain or Shine we are always full of GEES and smiling faces! 😁

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Why is Steve smiling? Firstly he's very excited about the summer series and the fact that on race one there will be free cheese griller rolls to all entrants... Get your entries in soon... Avoid disappointment... Secondly I think he's just enjoying married life

We caught up with Kira Bester after her great result at World Champs and asked her to give us a few tips for downwind paddling.

You’re guaranteed to have at least half of the STBB Cape Point Challenge race course be downwind, so these could be super helpful for training as well as race day.👉🏽

We also look forward to having Kira back on the start line this year to defend her 2025 title. Things are heating up!

1. Keep reminding yourself where you’re going. Know your line from A to B and keep checking it as you paddle. You’ll move off that line to catch and link runs, but always redirect towards where you’re intending to finish.

2. Use the small runs to catch the bigger ones. Generally, you’re using the smaller wind swell to build enough speed to catch the bigger, primary swell. Those little runs help you get onto the bigger ones, so don’t overlook them.

3. Take liquids and fuel, and start drinking early. People often underestimate how tiring a downwind can be. If you’re doing a 20 km paddle and know you’ll be out for over an hour, plan accordingly. Start drinking and fuelling early so you still have the energy to catch runs towards the end.

4. Tilt your pedals slightly more towards you. This is something people often overlook. Everything around you is constantly moving, and you only have a brief moment to react. Tilting your pedals slightly towards you can make the steering more responsive, helping you change direction quickly and move with the runs.

5. Try a slightly shorter paddle than you’d use on flat water. You want to be able to pick up your cadence quickly to catch runs and keep your boat speed up. A slightly shorter paddle, and potentially a smaller blade, can make that easier. For example, I use a 675 Orka blade at 206 cm for downwinds, but on flat I use the same blade at 208 cm.
