Introducing the panellists for our upcoming FOLIO book launch at Readings Carlton @readingsbooks on Monday 19 October. Joining us are Cuong T. Nguyen @cuongnguyenmelbourne , Lauren Hart McKinnon @be___right___back___ and Angelo Pantalone @angelopantalone for a conversation exploring the question: “How can we support emerging designers beyond buying their work?” Monday 19 October, 6–7pm Readings Carlton Part of Melbourne Fashion Week’s Independent Programme @melbfashionweek “How can we support emerging designers beyond buying their work?” Supporting fashion is often associated with consumption. While purchasing independent designers’ work is important, not everyone has the means to do so, and not every designer creates work with commercial ambitions. This conversation explores alternative ways of supporting emerging creative practices, from providing visibility and opportunities to building communities and creating spaces for experimentation. Drawing on the experiences of our panellists, we’ll consider how we can engage with and sustain emerging fashion beyond the traditional structures of the industry. Cuong T. Nguyen @cuongnguyenmelbourne Cuong Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Australian fashion designer based in Naarm (Melbourne), whose practice interrogates cultural identity, masculinity and belonging through contemporary craftsmanship and storytelling. A graduate of RMIT University’s Bachelor of Fashion (Design), with a minor in Sustainable Innovation, Cuong’s work was presented at PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival and exhibited at The Johnston Collection in 2025, with upcoming presentations at Melbourne Fashion Week’s Student Runway and Jakarta Fashion Week. Founded in 2025, Cuong T Nguyen Studios is an emerging bespoke demi-couture label redefining contemporary dressing through the intersection of cultural narrative, sculptural tailoring and material experimentation. Spanning menswear and womenswear, the studio combines traditional bespoke techniques and couture-inspired craftsmanship with technologies including laser cutting, digital imaging and 3D printing.
