Well as I take a final moment before heading home from the alpine club campground beneath the gunks, fall breezes in through the leaves and it feels like the end of this chapter. I feel so incredibly lucky to be given a second chance at a long life filled with the things and people I love. This time was filled with so much kindness from all the friends who helped with meals and their time to the incredible team at UPenn. In the end this summer was such a gift to be able to slow down with my @meg.yoder and remember all the good in life. Grateful to be here to feel it all ❤️

Each December, Lancaster finds a way to laugh a little louder while caring a little deeper. Lancaster Santa Stumble has become one of those moments where joy and generosity move through the city together, spilling out of doorways, crossing sidewalks, and sleighing through downtown in festive outfits.

What began in 2009 as a small idea among friends has grown into a tradition that belongs to the whole city. Founding friends Pete Ruggieri, Stephanie Horst, John Hockley, and Joe Gebhard created the Lancaster Santa Stumble to gather people, have fun, and support something meaningful.

Over the years, the event grew steadily. What started as a modest pub crawl became an annual gathering of more than 4,000 participants and has now raised over $250,000 for local causes. With that growth came a broader vision. Santa Stumble shifted its focus to reflect evolving community needs while staying true to Pete Ruggieri’s guiding motto: “Have fun. Do good.”

This year’s Santa Stumble carried that spirit forward by raising funds for @thearcpa, @acornacreswr Feathered Sanctuary EBR, and Precious Paws Community Cats.

The structure of Santa Stumble has always been part of its success. On the second Saturday in December, participants make a $10 donation that grants them a button and free cover at participating locations. That $10 is pooled directly to support community benefit organizations right here in Lancaster. Along the way, participants move through local bars and restaurants, supporting small businesses during one of the busiest seasons of the year. Costumes are encouraged. The sillier, the better. Laughter is unavoidable. Connection is constant.

Walking through the city during Santa Stumble, you can feel what makes Lancaster special. Santa Stumble reminds us that community does not always look serious or quiet.

Year after year, Santa Stumble continues to prove that when a city chooses to celebrate together, it can also take care of one another. In Lancaster, fun and generosity are not separate ideas. For one December day, and for the causes it supports long after, they walk hand in hand.
