The second round of our Art Criticism Apprenticeship is underway! The 2026-2027 selection is Houston’s own Willie Jamaal Wright.

Over the next six months, Wright will report on exhibitions, practice close reading of art objects, do long-form analyses of the aesthetics of infrastructure, consider the sociality of openings and closing, cover institutional goings-on, and just generally discourse on all that is contained within and exceeds “the art world,” in all of its formations.

Wright is well-suited for the gig, in large part because he’s a multi-disciplinary thinker. His arts writing has run in Sugarcane Magazine and been published by Art League Houston and Vielmetter Los Angeles, and has garnered support from the Ford Foundation, the Teiger Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation. We were especially drawn to how his background in the field of Geography shapes his outlook on how art takes place, asking not only what art is but what art can do in and for place-based communities. His research into urban and black geographies throughout the Diaspora has been published in the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, The Black Scholar, and City & Society. Jamaal is not short on projects within and far beyond the world of the arts. He’s co-editing the late Bobby M. Wilson’s Consumer Political Economy and African America for the University of Georgia Press, and he’s drafting his first solo book, Valorizing the Void: Place and Public Art in Houston’s Third Ward.

We are really encouraged by how deep the Art Criticism Apprenticeship application pool was. Houston has many vibrant art worlds and many people who are thinking carefully, critically, and creatively about how art takes place in the city. While we’re going to be spotlighting Wright’s work over the next few months, we want Houston folks to pitch their writing to Scalawag—and to our new print newsletter, The Brief: Print edition—about all that makes the city special.

A day with @kindredstorieshtx and @beckandcallhospitality was everything my lil’ heart needed. What I appreciate about being away from my city is the moments I return and the feeling of home shared with good people. My mama would tell me, everybody not your people and that's alright — what matters is knowing who is.

Key Indicators for me 🌟

1. It’s easy to breathe around them.
2. Vulnerability flows effortlessly.
3. A stable nervous system.
4. Increased feeling of joy & playfulness.
5. You know you good.
6. Creativity & optimism are activated.
7. Visions and desires feel possible and attainable, trusting you're supported.

And ya’ll know how Black people love to linger when we fellowship together? @beckandcallhospitality had me ready to schedule my overnight stay as soon as I hit the Doe’! 🌹
